I'm interested in knowing if videotoolbox (hardware compression) is supported in FFMPEG and or Handbrake on Apple Silicon.

I think you should be able to do it with DaVinci Resolve. It's a free video editing software, and I believe 4k falls in the free version.

Thanks for the screenshot (but no thanks for making me think even more of selling my 16" and getting a M1 Air ?).
I'm wondering: are VideoToolbox-encoded h265 files still either double the size or half the quality of software-encoded ones, or are there finally some usable settings with M1/Big Sur/HandBrake?

I'll run any tests I can. So far my takeaway is that it is impressive for what it is. It is much faster than my 2015 maxed out iMac.

I have it in storage but I might get to run some tests off of it before I transfer the rest of my data and sell it.

Here is x264 super hq preset run with rosetta vs running native arm.

I ran an encode at QF 60 and it was about half the size of the original source, and had the same level of quality. Using the default settings in quicktime (instead of handbrake) was much better and way smaller.

Care to test some more encoding?
