Does anyone know the weight difference between the 9.7 combo and the old Air 2 leather case? Apple used to post weight specs. They no longer do, which makes me wonder if the silcone combo is a lot heavier.

I've got my Air 2 Midnight Blue leather case "somewhere" (after reorganising my home office), so I'll try and dig it out and weigh it. From memory, the leather case was exceptionally light and much lighter than the "back shield and smart cover" cases you can get from Amazon/eBay (as I bought a few!). The only reason I didn't keep using it was the huge lip on it that negated any slimming the Air 2 had over the Air.

Went to my Apple Store last night and picked up the Smart Keyboard and lilac Silicone Case. Was concerned about the weight but after using it for awhile I feel the tradeoff for protection is worth it. And am very pleased with the thinness. It seems like magic that there's a keyboard tucked away inside the cover.

For reference:
iPad Pro 9.7: .96 Pound / 437 grams
Apple Smart Keyboard: 7.8 ounces / 221 grams
Apple Silicone Case: 2.9 ounces / 82 grams

The total weight with iPad Pro, ASK and Silicone Case is 1.63 pounds. That's just 2 ounces more than the weight of my iPad 4 naked, that I upgraded from.

So the ASK is a hair over double the weight of the Smart Cover. Interesting, thanks.

My old leather case for my iPad Air weighs 5.25 oz.

The difference between the old leather smart case and the new silicone case and cover duo is one ounce as measured in previous threads.

The back cover for the IPP is 84 grams. I was surprised as its lighter than the back shells from the likes of I-blason, etc

I went in to the Apple Store for a Smart Keyboard and came out with a $70 back case.

I honestly don't know what I was thinking. Buying a piece of plastic to protect a piece of metal? From what? But i bought it and now I'm even more confused. A smart keyboard costs $150 but at least it does something. But this? Its just a piece of plastic.

Anyway, it will probably go back. I bought a leather Air2 Smart Case on clearance for $17 that I never used. I'm considering just using a dremel to cut out speaker holes and either rearrange the magnets to "Pro" setting or just cut off the cover completely. Sure it will be ugly but if that Apple Logo is worth $50 then it'll still be there.

You may not need the slip protection, but the case protects two ways. First, the rim is sturdy and protected my iPad mini from a fall off a table to a wood floor. Second, there's enough of a lip around the rim to protect the screen if the iPad lands face down. I never had the leather case so I don't know if it's as protective.

Just as another comparison point, I just weighed one of my (many) Air 2 generic 3rd party amazon/ebay smart cover case combo's (JETech/KHOMO) and it came in at 195g 6.9oz

I had my older iPad 3 fall out of my backpack onto pavement one day. All I had on it was a smart cover, no case, and the cover flopped off and the screen cracked. So now I use a case on my Pro. Just makes me feel better to have that extra protection.
