Why does Apple need to take their entire store offline just to make some minor updates? Is their merchant tech that backward? Imagine if Amazon, ebay or any other major web retailer had to close the entire front end, just because they add a new line item or change the price!

If they are adding some new product then I can understand maybe that they want to be their usual melodramatic self, but if this is just regular maintenance, then it is pathetic that they need to go totally offline.

I'm hoping for a Mac Pro quad speed bump, but I fear that hope will be in vain. :p

Its part of apple, by doing this, they create speculation and excited, that wouldn't be there if they just 'added' it

But if they're not adding anything, aren't they just losing revenue just for the sake of maintenance? What needs maintaining anyway?

Maybe it's an iTunes-esque site revamp.

It gets tired after a while.

I was not aware that they did regular maintenance every Sunday that required the site to be down. That's a new one on me. But if so it is even more pathetic. I can somehow forgive taking the store offline when there is a pre-announced even and they want to create/support the buzz. That's part of their narcissistic marketing approach and bloated sense of importance they seem to have for every little announcement, no matter how mundane it is. But to bring the site down every week. That just sends the signal to me that you should not run e-commerce on apple kit. Harsh and incorrect i know, but it gives a negative impression of the flexibility of an Apple commercial platform in my mind.

I don't think it's every Sunday but the maintenance shut downs are fairly regular.

As far as I know, there have never been any new products updated on the Store on a Sunday. I can't think of any other major on-line retailers who close their site down like this.

Let's be sensible guys! There are certainly going to be no new iMacs or major hardware revisions out of the blue. Maybe some minor price changes in the light of rumours of new iMacs and Macbook revisions later next month but I don't think we'll see anything of magnitude. This does not mean I wouldn't love to be proved wrong! :)

I get the feeling that the store being down is due to a problem of some kind. 4+ hours seems a long time to do maintenance.

Maybe they are doing some sort of complete rebuild.
I think there would have to be some sort of problem here because even the biggest product launch can't take this long.

It can be done in less than an hour... Think about keynotes, it's down for like 30 minutes.

For the iPod event the other week it went down a couple of hours before the keynote started and came back up just after it finished. We've had similar downtime for most other keynotes in recent years.

The usual Tuesday updates usually go down about 11:30 GMT and come back up around 13:30. I know this because the new stuff always comes out just after my lunch break has finished. :)

A rebuild seems more logical considering the store has the iTunes 8 theme, and some of the store parts were messing up the other night when I purchased my iMac (I had to purchase it about 7 times before it went thru, kept saying it timed out, when it wasnt)
