The MacBook Pro I would want is the faster 15", which comes with a reasonable 1GB of VRAM. This machine costs $2,200. To equip a $2,000 laptop with 512MB of VRAM is sheer nonsense. Anyway, to get a similarly spec'd PC laptop, I could buy something like an Asus N56VZ for around $1,200. There are both fancier and more frills-free laptops with similar specs, but the premium for the Mac hovers around $1,100 to $800.

Asus is

Heaver
Smaller Battery
Cheaper chassis
No Thunderbolt
BT 4.0 optional

Don't try this with someone who doesn't "have" to be nice to you because you're in their store.

No one said you had to be nice, but that little speal at the bottom was quite rude.

The Asus is heaver by 0.2kg, not a noticeable difference at all. Yes the chassis is "cheaper", but it's still a nice/classy chassis built to last. And what of thunderbolt? I'll give you that some people like it because they rely on external storage access, but beyond that what real utility does it offer over USB3 at this point? Bluetooth 4.0 is indeed optional, but you will hard pressed find any N56's sold without it.

The only thing that keeps me coming back to Apple is the UI. I find the interface for Windows drab and unappealing. And Windows 8 looks like it would surely turn my laptop into a wannabe smartphone. Will I spend the extra grand on it? I don't know, so far these minor differences don't add up to $1,000 quite yet.

However, the point I was making is that it was pretty sad they had 3 or 4 "geniuses" swarming me at that moment but couldn't manage to pull that kind of data up.
FWIW, employees with the "Genius" job title work behind the Genius Bar, helping the folks that scheduled appointments to have their broken stuff looked at. About the only time you'll see them on the general sales floor is when they're entering/leaving the store.

Oh, I'm sorry, did someone hurt your feelings? Maybe you should get over the concept of a "My Little Pony" internet where everyone agrees with you and gives you support and grow up to realize people will have different opinions than yours and will be outspoken and criticize your statements when they are childish and ridiculous.

Replacing the hard drive on a post-2008 MBP does not count as a warranty voiding modification, do your research. There are even numerous accounts of people bringing in 2008 and older machines with user swapped HDDs and not being denied service, but I don't know for sure whether it was just an oversight on the pre-2009's or not.

Check your dates here... if it is 2008 or older... your Apple Care is done (Apple Care is a max of 3 years and only if you upgraded within 30 days of purchase, otherwise it is just 1 year). So, there is no warranty to void, and a tech will work on it no matter what you have done and happily charge you accordingly. I have my facts and have even supplied links to prove them... You have not. If you have a claim, please substantiate it.

The astute sales person will just say they don't know the frequency response of the subwoofer, but that it sounds great and do you want to listen to it and have a bass-heavy cut ready to go to demonstrate it.

Dealing with the public is not easy. My retail experience is that about 10% of the population is pretty nuts. Maybe another 5% marginally smart, but then again they probably aren't in a computer store that often.

First off I think it's pretty obvious I meant an Apple Care warranty while it was still in effect. Second of all, why don't you provide some proof? None of your links specifically mentioned replacement of the HDD. If you took the time to google that, you'd find that Apple even lists the HDD as a user-swappable part in the MBP manual. The only way this would "void" your warranty is if you somehow damaged the laptop while doing so, but it doesn't cover accidental damage to begin with. Please stop acting so dense and do some research before firing off false information.
