Why is the App Store app the recommended method over a computer?

(just wondering if there's anecdotal or empirical evidence)

Only reason I can think of is that it pulls the model, serial number, cell number, etc. direct from the iPhone that is being replaced and therefore no manual input errors. Maybe they can push the update to the app based on your pre-qualification status?

It’s not going to be a mad house. Last year preorders for the Xs max in every color and size were available until noon eastern time. Most of those preordering these phones are people like us, who are into this stuff more than the average person. And let’s face it, we’re not the the majority

Apple's marketing is on point. (I respectfully disagree).

It's possible they learned from the iPhone XS release and will create shortages* to create a perception of demand and create even more clout surrounding the Pro, especially midnight green.

* That's a harsh term, "selectively choose how much stock to provide to each location" ;)

This is the 3rd version of the X-based iPhone. Not many people were willing to upgrade to the XS or XS Max from the X, 8/8 Plus, and 7/7s.

Now people are upgrading every 2 to 3 years on average I now see more demand for all new models this year. iPhone 11 @ $699? That’s a decent price point. Everyone logging in the morning at 5am PT/8am ET much different than last year because all the orders were spread out more due to midnight/3am preorder time.

Well Apple changed preorder time to 5am PST/8am EST this year. It’s going to be a madhouse lol. I foresee servers crashing.
Madhouse? Highly doubt that or that servers will crash. If servers didn’t crash for the X, they aren’t crashing tomorrow. .

Remember, people on this forum are the minority. The casual IPhone buyer isn’t thinking to themselves ‘oh man, they changed the time! I am going to preorder now”. The iPhone diehards would have gotten up at 3 anyway...and if you look at the complaining on this forum about this phone, nobody is interested in it! And people will wait until next year.

That’s the thing, we are a small number of actual iPhone buyers. How many Xrs were sold last year worldwide? 11 sales will top that.

The fact that unlocked sim free iPhones are available for preorder tells me Apple has more than enough phones available. Normally you had to wait a month for the unlocked version. Apple probably has a huge supply to prevent any big hit in profits when the December 15th tariffs go into effect.
This...

Those are the casual buyers...they probably don’t even know about preorders or even care.

and most people think The new phones are a joke...barely new and nothing jaw dropping. Their not entirely wrong either. I could see the 11 going fast. But the pro and pro max won’t be that hard to get as long as you do it close to start time.

I really don’t feel like it is going to be a madhouse. Preordering isn’t like it use to be. But of course for now, it’s just an opinion until tomorrow lol
I think it depends on what you are ordering. I have a bad feeling about midnight green Pro's (Think Jet Black iPhone 7's...I preordered 1 minute in and got it months later.)

I took my pre-order as far as I could. Is it still possible to change the color? I went with gold but thinking I might want green instead.

We’ll find out very soon, but the whole concept of skimming supply to create an artificial illusion of shortages to generate hype smacks of old school bricks-and-mortar retailing mindset. Nobody’s fooled by it and we’re increasingly seeing that the companies vaulting to the top of the ladder are the ones that deliver quickly and efficiently. Consumer attitudes have changed and people expect and easy and quick journey, no matter what product or service it is they’re after.

It certainly appeared last year that Apple had got their act together - or, then again, they might just have overestimated the demand.

I would honestly hope Apple wouldn’t do something like that. I would hope for them just to be honest and get out what they can when they can. I would think if it could be confirmed that Apple did this it would hurt them.

The cynics would say they do it every year. But the flip side is, once delivery dates start slipping, they tend to underpromise and overdeliver. My iPhone 7 pre order had a 1-2 week initial timescale but ended up being launch day delivery.

never really know I guess. Under promise/over delivering is one thing. Purposely claiming your product is sold out to hype it up is completely different.

This is the one thing I don't like about the new time along with it conflicting with school/work for EDTers. Has anyone even heard a reason why they changed it?

Yes - there will be a lot of people in the ET zone whose day will already be in motion. Hopefully we won't have vehicle crashes attributed to buying while driving. :/

I'm betting that's right.

Last year the Apple Store App was up and running ready for pre-order while my iPad and my MacBook Pro still showed that black screen so I said screw it, going to order it from y phone.
