I know we are a few months out from when this year’s iPhones will be released, but I’m trying to put a plan into motion if I should purchase outright from Apple or through Verizon? I will be switching carriers from T-Mobile to Verizon due to my 20% government discount. What process do you think will be easier come ordering time? Should I purchase a SIM card now so that I will have an account or wait until ordering goes live? I know I will more than likely by stuck with my XS Max for a few weeks until everything is sorted out and I’m fine with that.

If you brought your XS Max direct from T-mobile then I believe it'll not work on CDMA so putting in a VZW sim now may not help you.

Given your position I'd personally wait until September then buy the phone directvfrom VZW. It'll come with the sim cards pre-installed and you can be off and running then.

Well then buy the phone through Apple and select VCW as your service provider in September/release date then.

I’m paying outright. If I buy through Apple will the phone be unlocked? I know with Verizon you have to have it on their network for 60-90 days before they’ll unlock it.

Should be, yes. Last I did this my 7+ came fully unlocked from Apple connected to VCW.

Until recently, that has been the case. With the last few model releases, the SIM free models have been available on pre-order. No way to know until close to order day, whether or not SIM free will be an option on order day.

As long as it’s unlocked when I pay full price, I’ll buy that if Sim free isn’t available on day 1.

If you buy in full, it will be unlocked. At checkout, don’t pick a carrier. Select the pay in full option and you will be all set.

I didn’t know that. Even more reason to buy sim free. I saw on Verizon’s website they’re taking $20 off the $40 upgrade fee if you purchase your device online.

I think it would, so long as you aren’t trying to get access to a different plan without letting them know. Just make sure you turn off the phone before you switch SIMS. Otherwise, you may get charged the upgrade fee.

I looked at the pricing and it’s no different from Apple. On ordering day, I think I will order and pay outright through both Apple and Verizon, and cancel the order for whichever phone hasn’t shipped. I did that when the X was released and the T-Mobile order shipped first, so I cancelled the Apple order. Although the Apple preorder page is always more exciting than the carrier one. I also like how you can track your phone from China to the US.

Ordering from Verizon might have advantages as setting up your account, porting your number etc. Maybe something to call them up and talk to them about. Just a suggestion.

I thought the same thing since I don’t have service through them yet.

I always go through Verizon. I use the plan were you pay a monthly interest free payment, you can payoff at any time. The iPhone pays off in 2 years and I just continue this payment with the latest iPhone. The old iPhone is sold to Gazelle. You are not paying any more or less, I always get Apple Care. Even if you don't use it you have priority phone support from Apple. Plus there are Verizon stores everywhere, not so with Apple.
