I went to my local apple store this morning and walked out with not one but 2 new iphones, wife wanted one too. They seemed to have a bunch. The store was busy but not too bad, I was in and out in about 15 minutes, didn't go right when they opened either. Way to go on actually having product Apple!!

I hear you. So far I haven't opened mine yet. Still following threads about any issues. But from what I saw at the Apple Store today I am willing to live with the iPhone for the next two years.

The only thing that will tick me off is if they add GPS to the next iPhone in the next 6 months. Since a cell phone is my only phone, having GPS is needed IIRC for E911 service.

A sucker is born every minute.

Either the iPhone is not selling as well as planned - or Apple knew how to plan for the demand. Will be interesting to hear about how many iPhones have been sold in the first week....

See my comments above.

This may be the best new product launch ever. So far no big shortages nationwide, just local ones.

Not really. I understand and support your development costs of a game system. But companies like Apple knew that they needed to build and stock pile inventory before the actual launch date in order to have the best experience for their customers.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo should look at the iPhone as a template for their future product launches. At least here in the DC area, when could I ever have been able to go into a store the day after a product launch and walked away with the hot new game system? I did that today with an iPhone at 11AM at the Tysons Apple Store....

Sony and microsoft operated on a loss of over 150$ per console.
APPLE IS MAKING A PROFIT. And that's pretty well documented, whomever said i was the only person who seemed to know this is stupid.

So why make millions and millions and lose 150$ each? After some time they learn how to make it cheaper. Nintendo on the other hand should have had enough stock, but they were afraid of the n64 all over again and over-producing.

btw fashion valley san diego has tons of 8gb's in stock (didn't ask about the 4gb)

That's not necessarily true. A lot has to do with the yield of iPhones. I talked to some guys at work who do Apple Competitive stuff, and their intelligence is that they are at a pretty low yield right now. As in, they make 10 iPhones and have to throw away 6 because they don't meet the quality bar (dead pixels, broken HDD, battery doesn't hold charge, etc.). I don't know how true this is, but either way, even if they triple the price of the cost of the parts, if the yield is low enough they can lose money.

You MUST be joking.
Not at all.

We're talking about commodity parts slapped together. Yes, there's R&D and engineering. But it's paid out on both sides.

Again, back it up, or shut up.

For all you know, Apple is selling the iPhone at cost, and takes a cut from AT&T's monthly service charges.

That isn't remotely true.

Consoles are sold using the Gillette Theory, while lower production costs are incidental and occur as a result of Moore's Law.

The Apple store in the Northridge Mall (CA) opened at 9am today. I walked in at 9:45am and with one person in front of me finalizing his purchase, I then got my 8gb. Total time, 5 minutes. No lines at all.

I think it's great people got all excited and camped out for days, but I just waltzed in this morning and got one in a couple of minutes. Activation just now took even less time.

Sarasota, Florida

None available at the Bee Ridge AT&T location this afternoon.

I asked about shipments and they had no idea... they tried to sell me one on back order, but I declined.

A trip to Tampa's Apple store may be in order!

i ended up ordering through them too, but now just want to go pick one up at apple. I shouldn't have a problem canceling my previous order, right?

I don't think so as long as you have enough room on your credit card to float both purchases for a few days, as I know somtimes it takes a few days for a return credit to be active. So you might want to just make sure you have enough credit left for the second purchase before you cancel the order. (It might also be the case that the pre order through at&t does not infact charge your card until they ship it to you.

Hope that helps!
