I can't remember a time when apple was sold out of laptops for over three weeks like this, especially after a launch where there were plenty of them. Something else is going on, but what I don't know. Maybe it's just a shortage of a part, or maybe soemthing else.

or, maybe a shortage of ... underpaid chinese workers

The thing is that the latest mbp revision including the free ipod deal makes the mbp pretty much inline with all the other notebooks of similar power, and it runs windows, so why *not* buy one instead of a dell? I believe this is the first time in the powerbook's history that this has happened, so the brisk pace off the shelves is only natural :D.

I'm loving my 2.2Ghz mbp!

I don't think this is it (well, not the only reason). I think there are just a lot of switchers now. Demand is high now because the product has been recently updated, and is in line with the price of similar notebooks. I don't think Apple was able to measure its own success well enough:p I guess this means there is a much larger market share now more than ever.

I'm working as a sales representive for an Apple Authorise reseller outlet in Malaysia. The demand for 15.4" MacBook Pro (first spec) is in a very high demand. And my outlet was out of stock for the first spec for the pas few weeks. I believe it is a good sign reflecting that Mac is getting into Malaysia market. FYI, Mac user in Malaysia is kinda rare due to the myth on Mac as an expensive and hard to use computer.

Some have no idea what is Mac and OSX. Some customer actually asked me why the "Windows" (they are referring to OSX desktop) looks different from normal Windows they are using. Some still don't believe Mac computers are free (technically) from virus. It's kinda funny to come across these customers. Hehe.... Sometimes it's kinda hard to convince them...

I just called the NYC fifth ave store to find out when they'll have the 2.2ghz in stock again since it's been three weeks now since they last had them. The guy had no idea. I don't understand that they would not have a clue when they'll get more of their own laptops - are they no longer shipping them to stores? If they are, there should be a way to at least predict availability, no? Three weeks is a long time and a lot of customers leaving the store empty-handed...

Pisses me off since I returned a defect one and wanted to get another one now. :(

I live about 6 hours from the closest :apple: store, but I had planned on making the drive this weekend to pick one up. I called all three stores in the Dallas area this morning to check availability & not a single one had the 15.4" in stock. I was told by each representative that they haven't had any in for about 3 weeks. RIDICULOUS!! I was told by one store that they were expecting a shipment in today, but it hadn't come in. Maybe that is a promising sign...

I live by the Norfolk, VA store and they had some when i called yesterday. I don't think you can check availability online, you have to call them.

But, i'm getting the 7200 HD so i have to order it.

I think I'm going in next week, those jerks had better have a 2.4 matte waiting for me!

I might be forced into the 17", which is a patently ridiculous size.

I called all three stores in the Denver Metro Area, none of them have the 2.2 Ghz Matte, Park Meadows had a Glossy, but I'm not going to settle for (in my opinion) a less quality screen.

If you really want a MBP with the matte screen, 2.2, BestBuy at Colorado and Mexico has about 3 more in stock. They are setting up their Apple store there currently. That's where I got mine. You just won't get the Apple store experience and none of the "employees" knew a thing about the MBP.

That right there is kind of a bad marketing move for Apple. When consumers walk up to the stores with cash in hand, and Apple doesn't have the product, they are losing out on lots of money. Supply and demand...

College Discount? Ipods (with rebate?)? Printers (with rebate?)?

And most importantly, can I bring it in to my local apple store if it has problems or do I have to deal with Best Buy? Store is only about 6 miles from where I work too.

Of course not, but I really didn't care. I have an iPod already and an iPhone, got a brand new printer a few short months ago and I'm not in college. I just wanted the MBP and the Apple stores didn't have any and I didn't want to wait four weeks at apple.com.

hey hexonxonx...
your sig says:

MacBook Pro 2.2 SR
8GB iPhoto
30GB iPod photo

What is a 8GB iPhoto???

There seems to be quite the delay on not only the 15.4" models, but the 17" high-resolution model as well. Oddly the 17" standard resolution model is shipping almost right away.

You could say that the demand is seasonal with education institutions and education individuals making their purchases. However, I wonder if there might be a production problem, and that they aren't allowing any more out of the factory until it's fixed. On the 15-inch model there's the whole issue of the yellowing. On both the 15-inch and the 17-inch there's a supposed issue with a "noisy" headphone jack. But there could be other problems too.

The reason I say that is because I work for a school and we have been able to get everything else in Apple's product line pretty quickly - except the MacBook Pro. For example, we ordered 54 configure-to-order iMacs at the same time (but on a different P.O.) as we ordered MacBook Pros and the 54 iMacs have already been delivered. If the demand was really crushing during the education season, I think it would be shared across Apple's product matrix, and not geared toward one product area; Apple's high-end notebook which is not priced as "education friendly."

Either way, we might get a hint at the quarterly conference call on July 25th. Hopefully well before then things will start to move again.

Talked to the dude at the Rockingham Park (NH) Apple Store today. He said they had some today, but all sold by the time I got there at almost 5. he said if they get a shipment, they get it by noon, and if you call they will set one aside for you. He also said they get more almost every day.

But I think it's going to be a black macbook for me anyway.

Your best bet is to call right when they are opening. Sometimes the Apple stores do have stock but they end up putting their stock on hold for people who call in.

In my particular situation, I called around 5pm on a Thursday and they noted that they had 5 glossy 2.2 SR MBPs in stock. When I got to the store the CSR told me that they had 5 in stock and would go grab me one from the back. She came back and apologized b/c apparently all of them had been put on hold. She suggested I call back the next morning as she noted that a lot of times people call in to put something on hold but never show up. I did as she suggested and I got the last one they had in stock the next morning.

I personally think it should be first come first serve. Not that I'm complaining or anything haha
