Anybody with a Studio Display have a pair of HomePod Mini's as well? If so, are they better sounding than the built-in speakers?
HomePods don't work well as speakers for macOS due to the issues with lag. But if you're using them for music, then yes, definitely worth having in addition to the built-in speakers.

I just use the built-in speakers for conference calls, system alerts etc.

@ascender Thanks for pointing out the lag issues - my internet can drop now and then - so something to think about.

Sorry, should have said, it's the bluetooth delay/lag issue rather than anything else. I've not tried them on Sonoma but am assuming its still the same situation as its been present for as long as I can remember with macOS.

Ummm. I was told my local Apple Store that HomePod's don't do bluetooth and work over WIFI. Have I misunderstood them ?

Would someone mind playing this song (no reason just shuffling classical playlists and noticed this song was doing it), and tell me if they whole song sounds like parts with loud static even with the volume around 33-50% or so?

Most songs sound fine (usually all classical). Usually listen around 25% or so in my office so I'm not blaring it. it is just that sometimes a song will play and I think man that sounds awful. I don’t know about music, so could it be the way the song was recorded and the ASD speakers not (don’t even know what you would call it, frequency working together?)

I have AppleCare on it with it being at work, but to move large wood desk away from wall, unhook everything, spend nearly a whole day on the process of going to the closest Apple Store, driving back, etc. so just hoping someone will play this and tell me if it sounds good or bad to them. thanks

I just played it on my ASD and it sounds good. I do hear what could be drums possibly be played with brushes instead of drum sticks. I don't think it's static.

Played fine on my ASD, no static noticed.

Just tested on my ASD at various volume levels. I would not call it static but at the lows it does sound like when a speaker is clipping(?) or as crowe-t said, brushes on the drums - or generally what siriusXM sounds like.

I guess its wi-fi with Airplay 2 which is why you get the 2 second delay with audio from video etc?
I tried and it was too brutal to continue with in every-day use

System notification sounds delayed a few seconds, skipping ahead in a video creates multi-second delays before the audio can play, just headscratching that Apple hasn't figured out how to efectively let us use the speakers/microphones in a HomePod with a Mac/MacBook

@onepoint Thanks this has been very helpful.

Edit - sorry. Wrong thread.

Does this HDMI connection and solution also apply to the Pro Display XDR? I’ve got this issue as well. Two Mac Pros, one 2019 7,1 and the other 5,1 and one XDR.

I have a few questions about the ASD:
  1. Is it possible to connect the Studio Display to a switchable power strip to completely turn it off when not in use (in regards to it being its own iOS-powered computing device)?
  2. How long does the Studio Display take to boot after a such a "Cold Boot", until it's ready to display content?

1. Yes, I have two, one of which is connected to a smart plug as I only use both ASDs when I’m working.
2. Less than 10 seconds for it to ‘boot’ and display an image - almost instant.

Thank you. But it‘s not like, you flip the power strip switch, power on your Mac and boom, you see the Apple logo? You have to wait 10 sec for the ASD to come online and show anything (after cold start)?

There’s a brief boot sequence on the display, I timed it and by the time my Mac Studio had booted from a cold start, the display was already showing the login screen. The whole boot was under 7 seconds but guess it depends on what Mac you have.

Hello, I have a question they will send me an Apple Studio Display '27 very soon and the truth is I have not so modern equipment in terms of connectivity I have a Mac mini Late 2012 and a Mac Pro 2013 Trashcan and I don't know if a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 converter can work for me I hope you can help me thanks

Joining this discussion with over three thousand posts already in place ....

I've had my Studio Display (tilt & height adjustable) for just over a week, paired to a new Mac Studio (M2 Max, 12/30/16, 64GB, 2TB).

I am completely satisfied with the Studio Display! It is much more elegant in appearance sitting next to my 27" iMac, a much bigger difference than I had expected. Quality is superb. Height adjustment is worth it, to me. I haven't tried the camera / mic for video calls, or really used the built-in speakers (I have HomePods flanking the display so those are what I'll use if I want best audio quality).

This is a premium computer + display but I wouldn't have it any other way. Replaced a 9-year old iMac that was rock solid, and I'm expecting the same reliability and quality from this new setup.

@ascender Thanks for pointing out the lag issues - my internet can drop now and then - so something to think about.
I am currently trying one or two HomePods as speakers for the Mac Studio. Two issues:

(1) the lag. I can live with this. YouTube videos, for example, take a couple of seconds to start after you hit the "play" button. It's fine. No big deal. The system Alert Sounds continue to play out of the Mac Studio speakers, so you do not experience the delay for these (which is good).

(2) the Mac Studio keeps changing the selected output device from the HomePods back to "Mac Studio Speakers," so I have to manually go re-select the HomePods several times a day. I could maybe live with this, but what I won't live with is that sometimes when I select the HomePods, the HomePod icon in the "Sound" list just sits and spins for several minutes and then the HomePods are not selected, and the Mac Studio goes back to "Mac Studio Speakers." I've tried everything I can think of, resetting the HomePods, reinstalling the HomePods, using only 1 HomePod instead of 2, using a different HomePod, etc etc and the problem remains. It is not a WiFi issue.

So, I probably have to give up on using the HomePods as my speakers and look for an alternate solution, including using ACD's instead of my current 2 Dell monitors (which is why I am in this thread reading up on ACD sound quality). I used to have a big audio setup on my desk that took up lots of space; looking for a tiny footprint but still adequate sound at this point.

The adapter will work, but your machines will have trouble with 5K resolution at 60Hz.
Your Mac mini will do 4K at 30Hz at most.
Your trashcan will do 4K at 60Hz, I believe. Might do 5K at 30Hz or so.

@Kurwenal Thanks very much for your experiences with the HomePod Mini's - I think I'll give them a miss as I'd expect the ASD in built speakers would be good enough for me.
