So let's cut to the chase: yes, Apple could have compensated for the Notch, either by hardware design or using software. But after years of slamming Samsung for copying from Apple's design, do you think Apple was going to walk into the crap storm Samsung would throw at them for copying their edge to edge look? No, that was not going to happen. Apple, one way or another, was going to differentiate itself from Android phones, specifically Samsung.

Previously, Apple had the Home Button. Many complained and wanted it gone, but it made an Apple phone instantly recognizable in a world of same-same Android clones.

In a few more years, Homey will be gone. He had a good run, but whether or not Apple could have included TouchID under the screen, he knew his days were numbers. He'd already been converted to a haptic feedback area on the iPhone 7 and 8 models.

The new king is the Notch. And it probably ain't going away any time soon. Come the quarterly sales report that will include the iPhone X, we'll see if most consumers bent the knee or not. I think they will if FaceID is as good a version 1 product as it was on the iPhone 5S.

Totally agree.

Every new iPhone release has this kind of scepticism. 3GS switching to plastic, 4 antenna breaks, the 5 glass “windows”, the 6 antenna bands etc.

Each seems to become “the pinnacle” of design and what everyone wants most when the idea of changing the design is leaked.

Apple know what they are doing. These phones will be fire

I know many don't like the notch, and I can understand reasons why. But that does not affect me, and I like to think that Apple has some of the best engineers in the world, which may or may not align with other peoples views of the design of this new iPhone. But the amount of technology that is incorporated into that notch with all the sensors, speakers and Camera is absolutely incredible to me.

I don't mind the notch personally, but I do think it is a genious PR move from Apples side. In the years to come, all smart phones will be all screen on the front. The only differentiator on the market, will be the visible notch on iPhones, easily recoigniceable and a show off.
This. My favorite are all the posts saying they’re waiting for Apple to remove or next year. Yeah, right. The notch is here to stay for a few years at least.

The notch will be gone just as soon as they can work out how to conceal that camera array under/within the screen or in the thinnest of pieces in the body of the phone.

I'll say its here to stay in next year's flagship iPhone but will be gone by the year after.

I'm presuming the decision was made on the basis of shipping this camera array and features today with the notch v not shipping the camera array until next year.

Is it possible to have the tech behind a screen? No. So I agree that Apple have gone for something designy to stand out and be different even if makes no practical sense.

Give me a small bezel instead of a notch and I'm in! The optics on full screen video are destroyed for me by the notch and cut-off corners.

still funny, to read all the comments in the several topics how people justify The Notch in every single possible way.

luckily Android users can now also experience the absolute beauty of The Notch

Have you seen the reviews? Are they fake or are some people really super stupid?

1 star
This app is stupid the only thing it does is add a little bar on the top of your screen

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! All this app does for me is block out a bit of the upper screen. Don't waste your time with this app.

haha

Can you explain to me how the notch will be gone on phones? Its impossible.

Some people say that the Galaxy S9 Plus has symetry but at a huge cost (the phone is way to tall). All phones in the future will have the Notch. There is no way around it. Otherwise you will get phones that are too tall and phones that don't maximize the screen to body ratio (both of those things are very very important). Get use to the notch, its a thing of beauty. Let go of the need for symetry. If you look at anything in nature, its not symetrical. Symetry is not natural but man made/created. Let it go.

It’ll eventually go when they can put the sensors underneath the screen without reducing the functionality of them.

Yes it does make practical sense. Everyone wants the largest screen to body ratio and edge to edge phones. Then where is the front camera and face recognition sensors etc suppose to go?

To accept the notch, you must be a King to simply justify everything Apple throws at you
No, No, to accept the notch is realizing that the notch made it possible to get the highest screen to body ratio of any phone. The s9 and s9 plus are way to tall. Everyone wants the biggest screen on the smallest phone. Apple has delivered. NOtice that everyone is starting to copy the notch design, I wonder why? Samsung will be copying the notch design because there is no way out of this problem. Apple has solved the problem. Apple will come out with the Iphone X plus in september at 6.5 inches diagonal. That phone will be smaller is size than the Galaxy S9 plus (6.2 inch diagonal). Now that's amazing. Apple is squeezing a 6.5 inch screen into a body that has a 6.2 inch screen. Genius.

Most people bent the knee after falling in love with that big black notch

No, most people weren't whiny children and accepted that things change and evolve and they moved forward in a way that met their needs/wants. Here we are nearly a year after release and these forums are still filled with those who feel the need to insult, denigrate and generally give those who accept the notch a bad time. What I'm not seeing is "notch lovers" giving the rest of the people a bad time. Most who have accepted the notch seem to take a "use whatever works for you" approach. So I fail to understand why those who hate the notch can't behave as maturely.

I have no problem having a reasonable conversation about the notch. I particularly appreciate those who are trying to find a compromise (ie let us move the content down and black out the "ears"). But comments like the above contribute nothing of value and only serve to push people's buttons and stir the pot. It also has the side effect of making those people look small-minded, petty, selfish and entitled because Apple didn't give them precisely what they felt Apple should have given them.

It's OK to not like the notch. It's not OK to insult those who do. That's a key point to keep in mind when trying to have a civilized conversation. Focus your hatred on the problem, not the people.

It’ll be just over 2 years I’m guessing before I own an iPhone with any kind of notch variant. My next upgrade is looking to be the iPhone 8 which is pretty difficult to ignore at current pricing and when it drops further in September.

I’ve never thought the notch was particularly pretty, but it wouldn’t have put me off a phone. The iPhone X as a whole package just doesn’t offer enough over the 8 for me at this stage for it to be a serious contender for my money. I’m just not excited enough to want to spend more than I have to and perhaps I’ve owned iPhones too long. I think more practically these days.

Completely understand your reasoning regarding the price, but I actually find the 8 to be overpriced; the screen is quite bad compared to the X. The only thing that I still love about it is Touch ID. I tried to go back to the 8 this past weekend but that 720p screen was not good enough for me. I enjoyed using Touch ID again. If only Apple had a 1080p screen on the 8. Oh, well. I’m still holding out hope for fingerprint scanner under the screen.
