Apple doesn't own Hulu but they should buy it.

GLWT.

NBC Universal, News Corp., The Walt Disney Company, Providence Equity Partners and the Hulu team share in the ownership stake of the company.

Yeah I don't necessarily believe these claims that Apple is a hardware company either. They didn't amass $30 billion (or is it more?) in the bank by selling laptops and iPhones. There are just too few of them out there for that. The iTunes store makes them tons and tons of money. Look how not too long (1, 2 years ago?) they were celebrating the 1 billionth iTunes download. Now, in the same span of time, they're prepping for 10 billion. You tell me where that $30B came from?

From the recent conference call:

"Regarding the App Store and the iTunes Store, we're running those a bit over break-even, and that hasn't changed," Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said. "We're very excited to be providing our developers with just a fabulous opportunity, and we think that's helping us a lot with the iPhone and the iPod touch platforms."

See here.

90% of all computers over $1000 are Macs. Apple has very high profit margins on their hardware, and that's where they make their money.

Wouldn't be surprised if they did, Apple will not allow any competition to their business on their iPhone OS products. The iPhone platform is completely designed to lock in the user to Apple services.

I bet third party eBook readers are banned from the iPad, since Apple now has it's own store. Any of the office suites are out too since Apple made its own. That's why Apple says that "almost all" of the 140,000 iPhone apps work. If Microsoft did this the Apple fanboys would of course be up in arms that Microsoft is evil.

Lol... So what happens if you try download something that's banned? Does it come up with an error message? Does it say this app is not supported? What happens?

I would guess they'll just claim it's unsupported and people will believe it.

What claims? Apple derives the vast majority of their earnings from hardware. That's just a fact. In the most recent quarter, Apple had $15.6 billion in sales. The iTunes store earned less than $1.16 billion. As Apple reports iTS numbers with other items, let's say they made $1 billion from the iTS last quarter. They make 30% on apps and pennies on song sales. They have to pay for bandwidth. They are not making much here.

Yep not only that, but the number includes accessories and it is a Revenue number. Considering Apple approves every app in the appstore there is going to be huge expenses paying the employees who approve apps.

But you can't really argue with conspiracy theorists. They don't live in a evidence based world.

I think Hulu are switching their model to something similar to iTunes..
They're looking at charging a monthly fee for access to a large section of their content, but the basic format will stay the same. They'll still be streaming shows to you (maybe, probably without commercials for paying customers) but I've not heard anything indicating they are going to a per episode sales format like iTunes.

Wow, I did not realize that Apple is shipping 3 million computers/qtr? How is it then that they have such low market share?

Looks like their biggest moneymaker is the iPhone, although I'm not sure how much money they get (if any?) from contracts vs hardware there.

While you and I may only pay $199 or $299 for an iPhone from AT&T or which ever provider (worldwide) we sign up with. The provider is subsidizing the cost to Apple. AT&T could very likely be paying $499 or $599 to Apple for every 32gig 3GS iPhone they sell. The providers make up their costs via their calling and data plans.

Apple in the end still gets $499 or $599 per phone resulting in a nice healthy profit. It's a win/win for AT&T as they are raking in the profits off their 2yr cell/data plans. This is why you see the huge revenue numbers for the iPhone. It's not the price per phone the end user pays, but what Apple sells it to the various carriers around the world.
