At first I was thinking why would they do that?
But in the last couple of weeks I've been doing some work with various server OS systems, and actually most companies offer free time-limited evaluations of their server OS.
- Microsoft offers Server 2008 free for something like 60 or 180 days - I downloaded and installed it in a VM yesterday,
- Citrix offers their XenServer for free for testing too - I also installed it in a different VM
- Sun offers their OS for free too (well, it's Linux based, but I assume it contains various Sun tweaks) and also offers free trials of their hardware.
- Ditto IBM
- Oracle offers free unlimited-time evaluations of their server software
- SGI or whoever owns them now also offer evaluations of their server-level (I think) software - I didn't bother to get a free account to check exactly which packages are offered.
So far Apple is the only leading server company not to offer free evaluation of their server OS. I don't mean some little trial that's only available to a few people in one country. I mean a proper open-to-all trial.
Hello Apple?
