Apple does understand it....OSX understands what to do with multibutton mice when plugged in.

I get along just fine with one button on my laptops (ctrl-click is pretty easy to do).

Mac OS X understands because NeXT understood, certainly not because of Apple.

Indeed, however I for one wouldn't be using macos if it wasn't for it's unix underpinnings (and yes my first mac was a system 7 based machine so I'm aware of pre-X). Well more precisely the combination of macos and unix.

The bottom line is that a multibutton mouse works fine and a lot of people like the simplicity of a one button trackpad so I don't see a reason to change.

I don't think a 15.4" MB would happen. The combined the 12" and 14" ibooks for a reason...so that they wouldn't have to manufacture two notebooks...but only make one "compromise" notebook. I think a 15.4" plastic MB would not be practical and I don't think it'd look great either. However, I would like to see a smaller MBP. I've fallen in love with the PB 12" form factor...

No. The way the line is set up now, it's perfect from a business angle. They can get maximum profits this way. By closing the gap between the 2 computer lines, they will lose money because more people would go for the macbook than the macbook pro.

Heck, I prefer 3 buttons on the trackpad, even though I already bought a MB.

I'd love it, but I don't see it happening. IMO, there are plenty of "consumers" who want a bigger laptop and plenty of "pros" who want a smaller laptop.

However, the two lines are similar enough now that this would leave very little difference between the two (as screen size and dedicated graphics are the two primary differences right now).

MBP redesign is technically overdue....

So, what is your problem with the current MBP design? I think it is absolutely stunning, and way better than any other competitor. BTW, most, if not all parts, of the MBP is redesigned compared to the PB.

MBP redesign is technically overdue.... from an engineering point of view!

Here is why:
ONE. there seem to be engineering flaws in the design. The metal frame around
the screen is not stiff enough. thatresults in a wobbling motion of the screen I have noticed with all PBs and MBPs. Everyone owning one can try this:
take a piece of paper maybe 2 inches wide, bend the open screen slightly backwards, then insert the paper in the bottom of the screen, let go, and the paper is trapped. This also happens with dust. It gets trapped there... To solve this the frame must be at least double in thickness (maybe 1 mm) to stiffen it. ALso the hinge itself is too flimsy.
I own an IBM and Toshiba laptop. There is no wobble and this even though the frame is plastic. It is clearly an engineering design flaw on the APPLEs.
TWO, the plate surrounding the keyboard and the pad is plastic, and I have noticed scratches on those which are really in use by their owners...
THREE, I envision a complete redesign using carbon fiber. Actually ASUS uses carbon on 2 or three models. Very nice.
FOUR: I find the quality control of ASUS TEC sloppy. And APPLE MUST stop this ASAP. A complete redesign would allow implication of better standards in terms of quality and control of same.
Software, OS is A1, hardware and quality is soso. That is not good enough, given the price tag.

It is true, the design of the old PBs and the (same) of the new MBPs is very nice.

:)

Yep, my diagnosis is correct:

I agree, I think that your diagnosis is correct Chundles. :D
