New Screen Saver Option

After installing the 1.1 update, I was milling about in the Settings and found a new option in Screen Saver. In addition to using your Photos for the "floating images" saver, there is now the option to display them in Slideshow mode. It probably uses your default Slideshow settings.

Yes, it will use those same settings for things like enabling/disabling Ken Burns effect, shuffle photos, etc. It won't however playback music :)

I'm also glad to see that Apple fixed the bug I was having with my Samsung LCD HDTV. The audio wouldn't work over HDMI before but now it does, Thank you Apple.

Smoother Video playback

They appear to have improved video playback performance. Fast forward and rewind is significantly better than before (which was next to useless). The jitteriness during high bandwidth panning shots is almost completely gone when CABAC is enabled (in the H.264).

I would like to have seen some way of organising the movies rather than a plain long list. I wanted to organise them by genre and new releases (like in a video store). Plus I wanted Movie ratings.

The YouTube videos are of a surprisingly high quality. However they appear to be always constrained to 4:3 even with 16:9 content. Which ends up being letter-boxed and side-walled.

However overall I'm quite happy with this update.

Cheers, Ed.

I just watched the Mac/PC ad at the beginning of WWDC in 16:9

Just flipping through, I viewed the Paul Potts vis from Britain's Got Talent... and was surprised to see that it was indeed a full screen 16:9. In :apple:TV I think I found it under "Top Rated" > "This Week"

Overall the YouTube implementation is great... however, I think the search is somewhat buggy. When I tried searching for "Andy McKee", I got the desired results at "Andy M"... however "Andy McKee" gives no results iirc, depsite the vids being titled as just that. Similar occurrences for other searches as well. It's like there is a sweet spot at 5-7 chars, and continuing to fill out farther than that goes to the point of no results.

anyone having issues with the harmony remote + youtube search?

Seems to be working OK (Harmony 550). I do have some lags while moving through the letters, but I'm pretty sure it's because of the live search (like Spotlight).

sidenote: Has anyone noticed the menus seem to be more responsive in general?

I already upgraded mine, and don't plan to hack it, but here's a possible "safe upgrade" method.

http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/YouTube_Patch

0. Don't update the AppleTV using the update feature
1. Backup /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Backrow.Framework
2. Backup /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app
3. Download the update dmg file from the link above
4. Open the dmg file and locate Backrow.Framework and AppleTV.Framework
5. Copy them to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks on AppleTV
6. Locate Finder.app from the updates dmg and copy it to /System/Library/CoreServices on AppleTV
7. optional - insert 127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com in the /etc/hosts on AppleTV so it can't reach the update server

I don't remember this quite right...When you used to put the Apple TV to sleep didn't the light glow orange? I just held the play/pause button for 6 seconds and the light went completely out? Did it just shut off?

It just goes dark. Only time I've seen orange is during startup (like today, after the update).

It's just in "standby". It can still sync, if necessary.

That's because not all videos have been re-encoded to H.264. Only the popular videos which we are seeing now have been re-encoded.

No that's not it. You can find some videos by typing in a the first few characters but if you type in more, even if you type in the title EXACTLY it won't find them. There seems to be a bug in the search engine.

This really needs to be fixed.

This update did not solve my ATV-Samsung LCD TV audio problems. My audio works most of the time but drops out from time to time for no apparent reason. All I have to do to get it going again is hit the source button on the Samsung TV remote until it comes back to the ATV and the audio works again. I had hoped that this update would fix this problem but sadly it has not. Looks like the ATV still has some audio problems with Samsung's new LCD TVs.

I've had that feeling, too.

But, I think the unfinished H-264 encoding might explain why not all of my Favorites show up on :apple:tv.

Wow. Either severely lacking in content, or a seriously buggy search engine.

Not being able to search by username is a big disappointment.

I can't even find my own videos! :(

A good start, though.

I'm pretty sure it's limiting the content, rather than being a search bug. I got to a video from a user I know has more videos. It didn't give me the option to find more by that user, like it did for some others.

There are a limited number of videos that have been converted to H.264 and will take some time to get up to speed (i.e. having all newly submitted content simultaneously available on YouTube and Apple TV) and it won't be until the fall that all the old content has been ported over.
