Patchstick

Use ssh in Terminal for a command prompt. If you have an aversion to the command line, use SFTP in your FTP client.
Thanks mcdermd for replying.
Selecting SFTP security in my FTP asks me to download PUTTY? Is this really necessary as i have recently connected to a friends hacked ATV without the security? (He's was hacked with ATV Flash though.)

Sorry if a dumb question, but how would ssh help me in transferring movies to my ATV box???

thanks, chopper

PuTTY means you're running Windows. :(

My patch stick doesn't include an FTP server or open port 21 so FTP won't connect. FTP is insecure. SFTP (FTP over SSH - "Secure File Transfer Protocol") is encrypted. It's generally good practice to use SFTP is you have the option.

I simply use scp and work directly from the command line on the atv.

BEsides, why wait to transfer the movies to the ATV over the network? I stream everything from a central iMac with iTunes. For that rare something that comes from somebody else's house, I use a USB stick or hard drive plugged into the back of the ATV.

PuTTY means you're running Windows. :(

Hi, No, I'm on a Mac;) but when i selected SFTP as the security in my FTP it told me to download PuTTY. I'm also very new to Terminal and can connect to the ATV box but that's about it.
I have a new ATV with 160gb worth of space to use??? Would it not be best to use that first or just use it for sync'd photos???
Also, how would i stream the movies? I also have a new mac with snow leopard.
There's also the problem of playing all different kinds of movie format on the ATV without converting them? That's why i thought the ATV Flash patchstick was worth a go...
If easier, you can reply to chopper72 at talk21 dot com

Many thanks for this.

I hate that people pay for this stuff ($patchstick.ca$, $ATVFlash$) that's readily available for free with a little leg work.

I'll post up the patchstick I use to hack my AppleTV. It works on 3.0.1. It will do four things:

- Enable SSH
- Install Perian's codecs (XviD, DivX, AC3, etc)
- Enable USB Storage
- Install ATVFiles (allows you to browse to and play any avi, mov, mpg, m4v, etc via an AppleTV menu)

This works as of 3.0.1. I make no claims otherwise and won't be supporting this beyond this post. If something goes awry, try a factory reset. That said:

Download and create an ATVUSB Creator USB stick. Select "ssh tools" and "bin utils". Do not select "XBMC" or "Boxee". When it is finished, mount the patchstick on your desktop. Download my packages. Unzip the file and replace the PATCHSTICK/payloads/patchstick/packages/ directory on the USB patchstick with the one from the zip file.

Plug the USB patchstick into the back of your AppleTV. Unplug the power cord and plug it back in. Linux will boot on your AppleTV and patch the files on the hard drive. When done, unplug the patchstick then unplug/replug in the power cord. It should now reboot.

At the main AppleTV menu you will now see a Files menu that will allow you to browse and play files on an external drive plugged into the USB port. You may now also play any avi files that were synced from your iTunes library after being made into an mov with the atvfooler script.

Good Luck. Merry Xmas. Happy Birthday.

thanks for your input. I did it and now Im able to watch my tons of .avi movies with .srt on my :apple:TV. So happy :D:)

just two things
1. to do a patchstick in your USB you need the Latest :apple:TV firmware (you guys search it on the internet and download it)

2. and most importantly: UNPLUG any external drive you have plugged to your computer but the USB stick you are going to install the patchstick, Why? because the ATVCreator does not show you the name of your drives, it just shows user/deviart 1, user/deviart 2 User/deviart 3 etc. I didnt know which one was my 1T WD My Book or WD Elements or the Cruser drive and I ended up installing the patchstick in my 1T WD, god I lose all my files, movies, apps, imovie projects. Thank God there is this application called AppleXsoft File Recovery for Mac (I own it my life) I was able to recover all my files back, but it took me 3 days. So be careful if you want to do this. Just unplug any External Harddrive you wont use just for precautions

Thanks for that! Now installed :)

One question, I understood that with ATVFiles you could browse to another mac/share on the network but after looking through the menu option that this creates on the ATV I can't see anyway of entering the network, only the ATV itself.

ATVFiles is an Apple TV plugin that allows the user to browse the entire ATV filesystem via the Finder and Apple Remote. This allows you to navigate to files that would not normally sync to the ATV, files stored on a network drive or another Mac for instance.

Have I missed something or is there something else I need to install via SSH?

After installing this, how do I access shared folders on my mac? I only store photos on the ATV, all my video content is stored on my MAC and externals attached to my airport extreme.

I dont have ATV but am considering it..is it possible to pull the rented movies off and burn them or save them somewhere else?

Hi, After you install the patchstick it will enable ftp on the box.

ftp to:
HOST: appletv.local
USER: frontrow
PASSWORD: frontrow

Once connected, create a file called Movies in the main root. This 'Movies' folder then appears under the FILES option on your Apple tv. Then just ftp all your movies into this folder, but quicker to use a LAN cable.

enjoy!

Nito TV Smart Installer Problem

OK, I have been scowering the internet forums. I need someone bad. I have appleTV 3.0.1. I have been through all of the hack stuff this past week. I used the patchstick atvusb-creator just like is described all over the place. I loaded up boxee and XMBC yada yada. I want to unlock the USB and when I go to run the smart installer I get an error. It won't do it. I am a little bit savy in that I can open up an SSH connection and am able to connect to my appleTV. I can type whatever commands someone tells me too and get it to work. I have no idea how to fix this error. It looks like this on my appleTV.

nitoHelper[163]XML parsererror:
Unexpected character h at line 1

nitoHelper[163]mount:/users/frontrow/documents/MacOSXupdCombo10.4.9Intel.dmgfailed

I don't know how to get the smartinstaller to work so I can unlock my USB. Any solutions??????????

well, patchstick is just to allow you to be able to connect your external harddrive in the back of your apple tv and view your contents, the ones in the external harddrive. You can´t access files in your Mac using this method. To stream content from your Mac to your :apple:TV just use iTunes to do so, but the videos must be in mp4, m4v formats. I hack my :apple:TV with patchstick because most of my movies are in .avi format with srt, and convert them to mp4 was a huge pain. Now my External HDD is plugged into my :apple:TV. Anytime I want to put new movies on it, I just remove it and plug it into my iMac and them back again to my :apple:TV (Im currently searching how can I do this process without all this unplug/plug/unplug and plug back again stuff).

hey all, thanks for the info on this webpage...this is one awesome hack!! I have gone on further picking up a few things as I go, and these are some other great links to follow on with..

install macfuse and macfusion so that you can access the files on your apple tv including any usb device connected to it.

magnificent guide here. http://jyoseph.com/use-macfuse-macfusion-to-connect-to-apple-tv/

install sharity for access to samba (or smb) shares on a nas. I think this is really the best way to go as it means that your videos are can be accessed from any device connected to your network and the computer doesn't have to be turned on! I picked a nas (network attached storage) device from wd (my book world 1tb) and so far so good

great little guide here. http://www.appletvbbs.com/mods-hacks/113-apple-tv-smb-mount-howto-enable-samba-shares.html

then plug in automounter so that you can automatically mount any samba share at startup. this will truly make the apple tv a household item so they you really can just plug n play....

the guide is here. http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/index.php?title=Step_by_Step_Guide_to_Playing_DivX_Files_from_a_NAS

there are many guides that i found (especially for automounter), but these are ones that I can confirm are working on 3.0.1.

I also don't think anybody's mentioned it here yet, but the original guide posted up here seems to only be available for windows for now (as of 18/1/2010) but you should be able to work something like that out if you are going to attempt a hack such as this.

Also great to know that the files all mentioned here (and included in the original post) are up to date (again, as of 18/1/2010)

I have posted some files in case for whatever reason you are unable to use the links in the posts above. Let me know if any inaccurate information here....

Cheers!!

Just my 2 cents, I found this (wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/How_to_get_iTunes_to_sync_other_video_formats_to_Apple_TV) and this little script called atv fooler changes the header of my non-atv movies and fools iTunes into syncing them with my atv. Very handy so I dan't have to do anything manually.

Cheers.

I came across this thread and honestly I haven't attempted to do this yet but I had a question. Can you manually add the files onto the hard drive from your computer? Is FTP the only way to get movies on the external hard drive to be played back on the Apple TV? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Cool thanks! Does anyone have a hack for 3.0.2? I have Windows 7 btw. All I really want to do is connect an external hard drive to the :apple: TV for more storage. I have no clue how to go about this...any info would be greatly appreciated!

i have used Macfusion and successfully mounted the ATV, however the /Movies/ folder is empty. I thought i was going to able able to copy my movies from my ATV to my iMac. Any ideas or am I in the wrong about the programs capability?

Everything is stored in /mnt/Media/Media Files/ on the AppleTV. In there you will find loads of directorys prefixed with the numbers 00 to 99 your media resides in these 100 directorys, but beware that the names are mangled so you wont know which files is which. But once you copy then back to your Mac/PC you can set iTunes to organize your media and it will rename them all for you.

McDerm, i'd love to try your patch, but your link just takes me to file dropper main page even if i'm logged in.

Will this method work on 3.0.2? Thanks for the help. Receiving my ATV today and want to do this immediately.
