It's official, the :apple: tv has a go7300 in it. Which pisses all over the integrated graphics on the Macbook. Is there any reason why Apple can't give Macbook owners a real GPU?

The reason is if Apple gives a MacBook a dedicated GPU, MacBook Pro will lose sales. If a person wants a dedicated graphics card in their laptop, they need to buy the more expensive MacBook Pro.

The products obviously do two different things. Apple TV's job is TV meaning videos pretty much 24/7 makes sense for it to have a decent GPU.

MacBook is a consumer computer (internet, production suite light photo and video editing) the need for a real GPU is not as essential as the Apple TV.

Besides a new GPU is coming....X3000 which 'pisses all over" the current GMA 950

OMG.......the AppleTV also has a worse processor than the ones in the MacBook. They're not even Core2Duos!!!

lol, exactly! We dont really know exactly what CPU is in the :apple: TV, all we know its the best apple needed... meaning it might only operate at a few hunder megahertz... Who knows, the GPU on the :apple: TV is most likely used to help with video decoding.

These are the same people who probably picked apart a DVD player and complained when the processor was only 100 MHz or something. ;)

The components in the :apple:TV are no doubt capable of doing everything that Apple said it could do. Why expect better components than what's needed? Users shouldn't complain. It works. Nobody ever complained about DVD player components because......well.......who cares what it was made from as long as you watched your movies? Same with this AppleTV. Apple sells computers, but this isn't a computer, and we really don't need to break it apart to judge it based on its components. It streams video to your television, and as long as it works, I don't care if a little gerbil was inside to make the entire experience possible.

Er, I think he's complaining that the AppleTV has a BETTER GPU than the MacBook. So it's a complaint about the MB being underpowered, not the Apple TV... Which is true.

And Apple's own marketing decision affects us users how?

It is just too bad that apart from the GPU the Macbook Pro has no strong unique selling features.

How many features do you want me to enumerate? So get off this trip that the GPU is the only strong selling point of the MBP.

As for the Apple TV... it's cheaper to use a slightly stronger GPU than throw a full CPU into those boxes. Especially when you are talking about HD video decoding and scaling since even the fastest CPU can still stutter on high bitrate decoding, filtering, and scaling.

I am am not too upset that the :apple: tv has a dedicated GPU. Maybe the next mack book will contain a GeForce Go7300 64MB and then they can beef up the MBP to like a Mobile 8000 Series 384MB. This would ensure a generous gap, while still enhancing the overall performance of the MacBook.

iBunny--

I have no idea if your idea would work or not, but I have to say it is nice to see a constructive suggestion instead of the incessant complaining! The consensus seems to be that the next MacBooks will have Intel's GMA3000 (I think that's the one) integrated graphics, though it is supposed to be a significant improvement on the GMA950 currently used.

Best,

Bob

ugh...one more time...

the macbook is a CONSUMER laptop. It is for a market of people who do limited tasks, including surfing the net, watching youtube videos, emailing, chatting, and doing limited ilife and other tasks. It is NOT intended to be a professional level machine! For this, the integrated graphics are FINE.

If you need a professional level macbook, then buy a macbook pro. That is what is DESIGNED for.

It reallys just sounds like the people who want a professional level laptop, are just irked because it's too expensive, so they think they should get all the pro perks for a consumer price.

Sorry it doesn't work that way, butmy macbook is PERFECTION for what I use it for, integrated graphics or not.

How much does Go7300 cost over GMA950? ;)
$40 at most.

And just about every other consumer notebook has an option for the Geforce 7200 to 7400

That's nice, why don't you go buy one of those then?

Oh yeah that's right, because apple offers something that no other consumer laptop does.

Haha, oh wow. That's some comedy gold good sir. Now can we please get back to Apple crippling the the MacBook's video card and then having members apologize or make excuses about it?

Why would it need a decent processor? Any ancient computer can play music in real time perfectly well, any old computer can play 480p movies perfectly well.

Sticking a Core 2 Duo in there would be a waste of money, the processor would never get used to its full extent.

It's not crippled

Since PC laptops with the same GPU allow up to 128mb of RAM, wouldn't that mean that the GPU is crippled?

I see what you are saying that it works for what you need to do, but I really think that there should have been some middle option between 64 mb of shared ram in the MB and 128 / 256 mb of dedicated ram in the MBP. There are alot of people who are not profesionals but could use some 3D performance.
