I am moving house in June and I was thinking of getting a shiny new TV and an Apple TV but the Movie Rentals, etc aren't available in the UK yet so is there much point?

I don't have many of my films/dvds on my computer at the moment and would mostly use it for Movie Rentals and Buying TV Shows (there are a limited amount of TV shows available in UK iTunes Store).

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Do you have a lot of music or photos on your computer? Some people like the AppleTV just a nice jukebox or photo slide show - much easier to show off your holiday photos when friends or family come round than huddling round the computer.

On one hand-
The Apple TV has loads of uses besides the movie rentals, so you could always buy now and use as a music streamer, or as a way of showing photos on your TV...

On the other hand-
Movie rentals will likely be a while coming in the UK, so it might be better to wait, and maybe get a bargain deal closer to the time.

My friend and I have Apple TVs right now, and we live in the UK. Love 'em to bits.

Go on eBay US and get US iTunes Gift Cards you can use the US iTunes store for Rental/Downloads. I do it all the time have had 4 rental so far. still got $90 left LoL.

how does this work....?

when i open iTunes it automatically goes to UK store..? how do i change that......? or does this just work on the AppleTV....?

Thanks, I'd not thought of buying US gift cards. Although, is this legal? I have just bought a $15 gift card for $12.99 so will give it a go with that one first. I'll then look at higher values when I buy my Apple TV.

In response to using the Apple TV as a music & photo streamer, this isn't really my thing.

When I buy my Mac Pro, I will be ripping all my DVD's to my Mac and will either stream those and/or sync them to the AppleTV.

Steve Jobs said in his MWSF keynote that international movie rentals should follow by the end of this year.

I consider it Legal as you are importing it to the UK as if it where a DVD which your allowed to do. Anyway it apples fault for having such a crappy UK store which is why we buy from the US one LoL

But isn't the lack of rentals due to licensing laws or something? As soon as I receive the code for my $15 iTunes card, I'll give it a go...also found a seller selling $25 cards for $25 but if you buy 4 you get one free.

Presumably you need an apple id associated with an account with a US address?

You will be fine they don't track IP's but if you do have a US address use it if you want. By using Gift Cards you skip the need for a CC which wouldn't work unless you have a US one anyway.

I will try to register a US account now and let you know how i get on :)

Only works when you click redeem and have the Gift Card Code. Make sure you have that first

I have a $50 voucher which I bought when I was in the states but I can't seem to get past the credit card page when making a new account on the American store... Can anybody help me out?

Btw I used my American friend's address for the account but it won't take any of my cards... How do I bypass this?

Any ideas greatly appreciated for my first post ever here at macrumors!

If you go to the stores home page, under "quick Links" down the right, click "Redeem", it'll ask you for the code on the card, and then it'll go through the registration process but won't ask you for credit card details.

Let us know how you get on :) I'm making my first purchase...just waiting for Scrubs to download.

that's the route I took but it still took me through the original sign up process (the 3steps) and asked me for my credit card :-( must be doing something wrong...

Congratulations on your success!

Do you get the credit card options at the bottom of the screen or the top? If they are at the bottom, they are optional so you don't need to put any details in.

just to say...

thanks for the tip. worked brilliantly. i can even sync with my UK ATV and watch on the big screen. brilliant.

now, if only we could make the ATV somehow look to the US store direct. then we could get HDef movies......

does anyone know if this is possible.... highly unlikely, but then again it took literally 5 mins to con myself a US iTunes account, so maybe anything is possible.
