If this works I am sold!

I've wanted an Apple TV for myself but mostly so my kids can watch their movies. They only have SD 4:3 TVs so I have resisted the urge to buy one. Thanks so much Cheap Geek. Your video is well done!:)

So it looks like the OP's and Gotrpm's methods are slightly different, hardware wise. takuzinis is using a male HDMI to female DVI and short circuiting some pins. And it doesn't look like he needs the male VGA to female DVI adaptor which Gotrpm uses. Gotrpm also uses a male HDMI to male DVI (which is plugged into the VGA-DVI plug).

So I already have the male VGA to female DVI plug, AND, I need a male HDMI to male DVI cable (for hooking up a Mac mini to my LCD), so it sounds like I should go the Gotrpm route when purchasing this cable. OR, is there something in the latest ATV firmware (I'm on 2.3.1) which says I should go takuzinis' route?

Thanks, figuring out the 4:3 trick sparked the purchase of a second apple tv for my bedroom, I love it. Thanks for the appreciation if there are any other tutorials you would like to see please message me on here, or on my site.

If you already own a VGA to DVI then just purchase the compatible HDMI to DVI. When you transfer from DVI to VGA it connects two pins on the DVI connector, and that is what makes this trick work. So the physical connection to VGA is all that is required. I purchased the specific cables I used in my video simply because that was all my local electronic store had in stock, and i saw a potential future use for the HDMI to DVI cable.
