Can u still use AirPlay ?

I'm really hoping ATv 3 - yes three runs at 1080p for my mkvs!!

I'm betting it will, due to the extra horsepower in the A5 chip. When that happens, I'll relegate my ATV2 to the 26" LCD and pick up an ATV3 for the KURO. :)

I have both. If you are having a hard time deciding, even for the top end Roku you can get both for a very good price.

AppleTV: Airplay, streaming of the entire iTunes library via the remote app and using my pictures as a screen saver was a big plus. I'm not a fan of their Netflix App but I like their Youtube player better than the "private" roku youtube.

Roku: Hulu Plus, MLB, Netflix, some out of copyright cartoon and old commercial stations are fun for me to watch as well. I also like that I can plug a USB drive into it to play media.

If I had to pick just one it would be AppleTV. I use Airplay and remote iTunes streaming the most and while i like Rokus netflix app better, I could live with AppleTVs if I had to. However as I get closer to cutting the cord from DirecTV I am finding that the Roku is playing a bigger role with Hulu+, NHL, MLB and NBA. Now if only the NFL would give me an internet option...

I have both mainly because neither one does everything. For me, the reason I got Roku was for Amazon and the reason I got ATV was for the iTunes interface and to serve as an alternative to another airport express for music streaming. Neither is perfect but picture quality seems to be about equal to me. Both are connected wirelessly through a Time Capsule. If I could only have one, it would probably be ATV.

I'm also interested in getting an ATV2, possibly this weekend. I just moved and don't want to get cable/satellite. Can't pick up a thing through my OTA antenna and box though and don't want to pay $20 a month for local channels. Does ATV have major networks, jailbroken or not? I have Netflix and wouldn't mind Hulu or Hulu+ but that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Also a big sports fan. That could possibly be my deal breaker!

I wasn't comparing Hulu Plus to broadcast, cable or satellite TV. I was comparing it to Netflix and iTunes video offerings, which are its direct competitors for people thinking about cutting the cord.

And Netflix is not alone in providing commercial-free videos/movies. Apple doesn't do it. I don't think VUDU does it either. (Maybe someone who's used VUDU can speak to that).

The topic is internet video, not broadcast or cable/satellite video. And, in that field of competition, yes Hulu Plus is doing something unusual by charging you AND inserting commercials.

Actually the direct competitors for Hulu when it comes to people thinking about cutting the cord are the cable and satellite companies currently sending those people TV over the cord. There are far, far more people with cable and satellite than with Netflix.

In fact, Netflix is mainly a movie service. Although they have improved it a lot lately, their TV offerings aren't even in the same league as what Hulu Plus is offering. Netflix is offering almost exclusively older seasons of shows while Hulu Plus is offering current seasons of some of the most popular shows as well as back seasons too. There is no chance Netflix will be doing this at their current price and without ads. They are not even trying to compete with what Hulu Plus is doing as far as TV goes.

Really the only comparison to what Hulu Plus is doing (current seasons of hit tv shows) is cable and satellite and yes they have ads in their paid subscriptions. And yes I already mentioned iTunes but they have an entirely different model where you are going to pay even more than cable or satellite subscriptions if you want to watch a similar number of shows but without ads.

I have both, I use ATV for the great preview function, as well to sample what's in the theaters, I rent movies from Amazon, which at least for me has a much better picture than ATV, their movie preview however, is 2 minutes of the opening of the movie, I prefer the Apple trailers.I access Netflix from both, if I had to choose, ROKU all the way. Both are hooked direct to the Roadrunner Lightning Router via eithenet CAT 5

I have :apple:TV2 on my main TV (Sansung 40in) but my Blu-ray player gives me Amazon and a few other Apps that ATV doesn't provide. My TV has USB hook-ups for access to an extra 2TB HD with additional movies.

I'd say get the Roku, just got a couple for my home setup. It streams Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, I have more tv options now than when I had cable:D

The only real benefit of Hulu Plus is for new episodes of Television shows. I'm on the fence with "cutting the cable" and Apple Tv's lack of Hulu support is making things difficult for me.

The Roku's loading times look atrocious to me and I prefer the Apple TV navigation and options in Netflix. Come on Apple and embrace Hulu Plus...so what if it cuts into your TV show sales.

I just cut my cable, best decision I've made in years. My setup includes two Roku's, three antenna's, a PS3, and a Mac Mini.

I have an Apple TV2 and Netflix streaming is really quirky. Somedays it seems just dandy, but on others the audio/video gets way out of sync. Usually a pause and un-pause fixes the problem, but I thought you might like to know it happens.

On the MacPro or the Wii, Netflix never seems to have this issue. So I am assuming it is the ATV2 at fault. I may be wrong though.

We just seem to be talking past each other, so just realize we see things differently and I'll bow out.

There's a new XBMC add-on that allows for streaming of live sports. I've only watched one thing on it, and it was a nationally broadcast sports game (worked great), but if it holds up it will be a game changer for me.

The power of XBMC has ready made my ATV2 a must-have gadget.

I just installed navi-x on the atv2

Anyone who says roku is better is insane

You want to say that to my girlfriend who doesn't want to deal with hacking her device??? Not everyone has the expertise or desire to hack their devices. Some people just want a plug-n-play experience. And anyone who thinks those people don't exist is insane.

As for me I have a REAL set top box...a Mac Mini with Plex. Anyone who thinks an ATV2 is better than a Mac mini is insane.

Jailbreaking is so easy, a 10 year old can do it

Im no expert , i couldn't even add more ram to my computer ,messed my hole **** up

No expertise is needed, takes about 10 minutes , the jailbreak program does all the work, all you have to do is hold shift on the keyboard, hit restore in itunes and select the custom firmware

Does that seem hard ?

Btw comparing a mac mini to an apple tv is "insane" :)

I have a Mac Mini & an ATV2 running XBMC hooked up to my TV. Tried Plex on the mini & on ATV & never liked it - it's a resource hog for me and doesn't have near the plugins that XBMC does. My Mini acts as an iTunes / XBMC media server. For movie watching, I use XBMC on the ATV2 and couldn't be happier. (Prior to the ATV2, I used an ATV1 also running XBMC - that box is now in my bedroom). So, I guess I am insane because for movie watching and add-ons (navi-x, Icefilms, pandora, muze tv, radiotime etc., etc, etc. - there are more every day), I choose ATV1 or 2 (they both seem pretty REAL to me) over my Mac mini every time.
