i'm guessing that re-tagging everything you want to re-tag, and then doing a factory restore on the apple tv may have the same end result as reimporting all of your movies.

maybe apple tv just only looks at sort data the first time it sees a file? i don't know if that makes sense. but it might.

i'll test my restore theory tomorrow probably

I was doing a soft reset on the :apple:TV to try to force it to read from the iTunes DB again. I think doing a factory restore is a little extreme, though. Because then you have to pair everything up again.

Even though it messes up all the play counts and last played dates deleting the movies from the library and adding them back in is, in my opinion, a less extreme solution.

Michael

well, that's just it though. my play counts are worth the extra 2 minutes it'll take to re-pair the apple tv with my imac.

i will let you all know if it works

Since all my efforts have failed ... i am gonna try the final option ... tag all the movies and then copy over to itunes ... reset the apple tv ... gonna wait for the weekend for that one ...

just a note - i never had a sort problem in 1.1 ... only began with take 2 and newer ...

thanks for your help ... will let you know if it all works out

so i've done all of the neccessary testing.

basically, the file has to be tagged before apple tv reads it for the first time.

so if you use lostify to tag your movies, then unplug the apple tv from the wall while you add the movie to itunes and change its sort data.

if you use metaX, you're in the clear, since you can add sort tags before adding to itunes.

if the movie is already in itunes, you have to either tag it, copy it to your desktop (or somewhere else), remove it from itunes, and re-add it
-OR-
re-tag all of the movies that need it, and then restore your apple tv to factory settings. yes, this is an extreme option, but hopefully you only have to do it once, and then just use metaX from now on. i myself am a lostify fan, but for movie series from now on, i'm using metaX

It seems to me that this must be a bug. It should not be necessary for us to jump through these hoops just to re-tag, or add additional tags to movie files. Has anyone sent Apple feedback about this yet?

Regards,
Michael

Just an update ...

Didn't do the whole re-tagging and reset bit ... but did send apple some feedback ...

Let you know how that goes.

Don't expect to hear anything back from Apple. They don't reply to feedback.

Michael

Hey guys,

First time poster, long time lurker. I realize this discussion hasn't been bumped in a while but I came across it in my quest to fix this problem and would like to share what worked for me.

First I used the name sort option that has already been discussed. This did not change how the apple tv displayed my movies (only changed how itunes would display them). Using finder I traveled to the itunes folder so I could see my files. I created an empty folder nearby, selected the files that wouldn't sort from the itunes/movies folder and dragged them out of the into my newly created empty folder. I then went back to itunes, selected the non-sorting movies and deleted them. I then went back to finder and re-dragged the files back into the itunes/movies folder. From here I dragged the newly dragged files into my itunes library (this doesn't copy anything as the files are already in the proper folder, it just refreshes the itunes movie page). From here I just jumped down to my apple tv in itunes and synced it and everything showed up properly on my apple tv.

Cheers.
