Hi. I am wondering why it is not possible to sync and stream parts out of one itunes library? Actually, what I try to archive is the following:

1. Sync all my photos to Apple TV
2. Stream the rest.

Can somebody please explain me in detail how to do this!? I read in some KB article on the apple website that it must be possible. Unfortunately this was in regards to version 1.X.

Many thanks in advance.

Ok. I tried this earlier but the only thing what happend was that all the content on my ATV got deleted.

Ok, I will try one more time. What about the passcode do I have to enter two different passcodes? One for stream and one for sync?

Please give me a more detailed description. I am going nuts already...

THANKS

?

Isn't that to be expected if you only want to sync photos to the AppleTV?

No.

Once again. One Itunes Library on my MBP.

I like to sync photos and I like to stream music, movies and tv shows to my ATV.

The questions is, how to do this? Can I sync and stream in parallel?

I read in some documentation, that it supposed to be possible.

Thanks again for your support.

1.In itunes, on left side of screen, below the itunes store, you should see your apple tv. Click on it, then click on each tab (except photos) and choose not to sync anything. Click on photos and tell it which to sync.

2. Click sync. Wait for it to finish.

3. Leave iTunes running, and go to your apple tv.

4. Now, all of the content in your itunes library will be available in the apple tv menu. Choose something to play, and it will stream.

I'm with NightStorm on this - if you're streaming to the Apple TV, why do you expect there to be any content on it? Apart from the pictures you sync, of course.

I use the same method described previously. Choose "Custom Sync" and then uncheck the sync option for each media tab except for photos. The pictures get synced to the Apple TV and everything else streams.

I've been having trouble getting syncing vs stream for a while too, but think it has more to do with what my situation is. I have a 80GB MB and a 160GB Apple TV. I can't sync everything and would rather have what I have on the Apple TV and not on the laptop. I'm going to set up a MacMini with an external drive soon, but I'm waiting for an update...

I unchecked syncing in all the tabs, but it's still transferring TV shows from Apple TV to the laptop. Do I instead?:

1. check syncing, forcing files to get located on both
2. once synced, remove the Apple TV from iTunes, blocking syncing or streaming.

Can't I just stream without uploading everything from the Apple TV?

I'm having trouble as well. It's Sync OR Stream, but not both. In Sync, I uncheck all the tabs, and the AppleTV says I have no content to play on my AppleTV, any ideas?

On the Summary page for your Apple TV, you should have the "Custom Sync" radio button selected. Right under that you should make sure that the "Show only the synced items on my Apple TV" box is NOT checked. If you made any changes, push the Sync button in the lower right corner and give it another try.

^^^ Thanks. It wasn't checked.

Here's the deal. I had a few things I purchased on it. I had to wait until they synced back to the computer, then all the other stuff for streaming showed up.

Nice to know.... :D

Do you think this may be a short-term answer to my problem here ?

I basically want to load up my Apple TV and leave it, and then only sync when I add more content to my library. Hopefully this then wouldn't matter if my iTunes library was connected to my laptop or not.....?

From that description you seem to want to do the opposite of what the previous poster wanted to do. I'd suggest that you have the 'Show only the synced items on my Apple TV' checked, select the things you want synced, and get your sync done.

One real difficulty is that iTunes loses track of the library when you unplug your USB device. I think the solution to that is to never run iTunes without having that drive plugged in. My entire library is on an external Firewire drive, and I don't have problems with iTunes getting confused - but iTunes is never running if that drive is not connected.

Hope that helps,

A.

Hmmm... thanks for the reply - maybe it was a one-off as I didn't think I'd run iTunes whilst it wasn't plugged in (but couldn't guarantee 100%).

Touch-wood it seems okay at the moment, but I'll change the sync-ing setting and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks again

Sync only photos also

I too only want to sync photos and stream all other content to my apple tv. Up to now, I have not synced anything. When I follow the instructions set out above and click on the apple tv tab, I only have a summary tab and a photos tab. The photos tab does not give me the option to sync and the summary tab does not give me any options at all as it simply states the name of the apple tv, the version, capacity and serial number of my apple tv. How do I get to the point where I see the syncing options noted above?

Have you paired the Apple TV and iTunes by entering the 4-digit code on each?

If you only have the Summary and Photos, you have chosen "Add Shared iTunes Library" rather than "Connect to iTunes" in the Settings/Computers panel of your Apple TV. You can only stream in this configuration.

To fix this situation, select your library name from that list, click on "Disconnect" from the menu, then go back and choose "Connect to iTunes" on the Settings/Computers page.
