What kind of ridiculousness is this?
The entire reason I bought an Apple TV was for AirPlay mirroring, yet I can't even do it?

Wow.
I've tried restoring, and it does download the "latest" update, but afterwards, its back to 4.3

Unbelievable. $99 well spent. I don't have a micro-USB cable either.

I had the same problem as y'all until 5min ago. Here's what you need to do to get it to work.

1.unplug the power cord from your Atv2(this must be unplugged or iTunes won't recognize your Atv!)

2. Using a microUSB cable, plug in to iTunes directly from your atv to computer

3.Your computer will display ur atv, click RESTORE(this will automatically download the new update even though it kept telling you it was already up to date.

4. You're done! Now in settings it'll say 4.4.1 and video mirroring will now be an option to select when u double click on the home button and scroll all the way to the left.

You can restore wirelessly; Settings > General > Reset > Restore.

Doing that will force it to download the OS and then do a factory restore.

I did that, it didn't work.

I don't have a micro USB cable, but thank you for your suggestions I appreciate it.

Just bought my apple tv Tuesday for the sole purpose of AirPlay mirroring... Had same problem upgrading to 4.4 called tech support to no avail, they told me its prob a faulty unit. Returned it, got a new one, and had same problems. Glad I'm not the only one! I will buy a micro USB cable tmrw but this is ridiculous that the problem hasn't been fixed!

Please guys just do what stayfly2407 said. I bought my second apple tv yesterday and had the same problem couldn't updade! I just plugged it to my mac restore it with itunes and was watching hockey in mins. :)

To reiterate, not all of us have micro USB cables.

Exactly. Apple should have provided the cable, just like they do with the iPhone, iPad and iPod.

Like bluray players or hdtv's they should all come with hdmi cables... That won't happend anytime soon!

I think Apple is probably limiting this update to early adopters with higher bug tolerance and technical know-how (and micro-USB cables), for now, as they work out the bugs. I think they want to avoid forcing the update on every owner, only to create a public opinion nightmare.

It sounds like you belong in the camp that should wait a week or so, until they promote the update to general distribution over the aTV update menu. Otherwise, you'll just be back with "I updated my aTV and now ____ doesn't work!"

There are three options for you at the moment if you haven't got a micro USB cable:

1) Wait.
2) Buy a Micro USB cable.
3) Go back to the Apple Store and:
a) Get them to updated the unit for you, or
b) Return your :apple:TV.

Option 2 is probably the cheapest option if you don't want to wait, depending on how far away you live from where you bought your Apple TV.

This happened to me last night. Here is what you need to do:

1.Buy or borrow the mini USB cable
2. Search Internet for the latest 4.4.1 atv2 Ipsw file ( found mine on season pass website)
3. Connect to iTunes aNd click on Atv on left sidebar
4. Click option key and click on restore at same time
5. Finder will come up to find the file you downloaded
6. Enjoy your updated atv2

By the way, for those that don't think they have a micro-USB cable, a lot of cell phones use micro-USB cables. So check all the cell phones in the house before you go out and buy one.

So do Playstation 3s to charge the controllers.

The big difference between the two is the ATV2 is suppose to update wirelessly without the USE of cables. When it comes to blu ray players and HDTV's, most know that cables are required for the products to work.

I think people are confusing micro usb with mini usb... minis are everywhere, micros are pretty rare. PS3 controllers are definitely mini, not micro.

The only device in my house that uses micro is the original nook, if that helps anyone. I used its cable to restore my AppleTV just the other day.

So does a micro have a small connector at one end and a normal sized one at the other end
