The only device in my house that uses micro is the original nook, if that helps anyone. I used its cable to restore my AppleTV just the other day.
I'm pretty sure the Kindle uses a Micro USB cable, too, and my Samsung phone is Micro USB.

The big difference between the two is the ATV2 is suppose to update wirelessly without the USE of cables.

And you can.

4.4 was removed from general availability because it bricked a number of people's units. Once Apple fixes whatever was the cause of that issue, it will be made available again via the :apple:tv software update utility and you will be able to download it via the wireless connection.

The folks using micro-USB cables with direct connections are restoring their units and Apple's restore servers have 4.4 for whatever reason (perhaps for "in the field" testing, as slothrob hypothesized).

I would imagine performing a restore wipes out any settings already on the device, which doesn't happen with an update, so I'm willing to wait, but then I don't need Airplay right this second.

If 4.4 was such a problem, why did Apple leave it available through iTunes? That makes it still available for any and everyone. Can't believe they left it there for "testing" purposes. It tells me they are not paying attention too much to the ATV2, which tells me it is not much of a priority now or in the future. Again not an argument to not include micro usb cable.

Spite? Since it seems many folks can't find a micro-USB cable to update it before Apple is ready to push it out again via :apple:tv Update.

Got a cable at Fry's today ($9) going to wait till tomorrow to call Apple & see what they say.

So do Playstation 3s to charge the controllers.

That is a mini-USB cable (I have loads of those) but a micro USB cable is even smaller and not that popular outside of mobile phones.

Read this for a description and pictures of the differences.

I restored mine two days ago and it got 4.4.1 actually. Same problem as everyone else, so bought a micro usb cable for 9.98.

If you have a KINDLE, you can take the AC adaptor off of the USB and use it for the update. Kindle uses miro USB.

Its an easy fix, once you do it.

Got off the phone with Apple support - They said what has been said on this forum - you can update vis usb to itunes but only download 4.4.1 not 4.4. They don't know when the update will be pushed directly to Apple TV.

The problem is with the OTA update mechanism. Updating via iTunes does not brick the aTV. So it makes since to leave it available to users who are having problems with the ota update.

Mine had an update available. It downloaded and restored to factory 4.4 and then it updated again to 4.4.2... (after going to the "check for update" thing)

Maybe there was a glitch in the initial 4.3-4.4 jump (settings corruption or something?) because iPhones and iPads had to restore when taking the jump to iOS 5, maybe the Apple TV needed something similar?

Mirco USB cables are harder to come by. I have 4, that came with my wd pocket drive, jabber Bluetooth headset, Motorola hand free carkit, and my Kensington iPad Bluetooth case.

It's kind of silly that they could not have used the more common mini USB connector, I can understand on my Bluetooth headset but the apple tv?

Mini usb has been phased out. Micro usb is the new standard for all phones in Europe (besides the iPhone). It is hard to find a new product these days that uses mini usb.
