Since I started this thread I have been using my Mac to stream to my Apple TV at my cabin, I did this by setting up a access point on my Mac for the WiFi network. Since upgrading to Lion I tried this again. Did exactly the same thing but it says the Internet sharing is on but nothing finds the network. Also the WiFi icon in the top bar just shows bars and not the arrow thing.

Anyone else seeing this?

Very interested on my end as well.

Another Solution

I found this out the hard way. I didn't want to carry another piece of equipment, such as a wireless router, with me everywhere I go. I also didn't want to use my iPhone mobile hotspot for streaming video from the internet, since it is limited on bandwidth. All you need is this:

Buy a cheap 4 foot Cat 5 Ethernet Cable. Plug one end into your MacBook Pro, the other end into your Apple TV2. On your MacBook Pro, go to Settings -> Sharing. Under Internet Sharing choose to share your Wi-Fi, and check the box for Ethernet.

Done. No other setup required. Uses whatever Wi-Fi your MacBook Pro is using (i.e. hotel internet).

Whew!

I am not understanding why one wouldn't connect the AppleTV to the same hotel network. I did that on a recent trip and it worked well. Both the MBA and the AppleTV logged into the hotel network and could do my normal sharing I do at home.

Many hotels require a username and password which is entered and validated through a web page. You cannot access a browser with the Apple TV, so accessing hotel or other wifi networks that require login through a browser page is impossible with an AppleTV.

I like this solutions with the exception of the ethernet cable. Unless I'm missing something, you cannot have your laptop connected via Wifi and then have it share an internet connection via wifi. If you see, at least in Lion, the settings, you can share a wifi over ethernet or a ehternet over wifi, but not wifi over wifi. You have to remain tethered via ethernet to make this work. Which isn't preferred.

An alternate solution might be to contact the supper to the hotel internet provider and give them the Mac address of the Apple TV device and have that Mac Address added to known devices and then connect without the laptop or the ethernet cable.

One other solution (although I haven't tested it myself, I heard it works fine) would be to buy a lion compatible wifi USB dongle. Use the internal WIFI to connect to the hotel, and use the USB dongle to create a network for the apple tv/xbox/etc.

Here is link demonstrating the process using 2 usb adapters (Bear extender in this case).
