would be extremely good!! doesnt it have a 2.5' hard drive in there but??

there must be some way to manually put the library file on and make ATV go to a location. hak-x0ring :p

You can replace the internal hard drive, but it isn't easy and voids the warranty.

You can hack the Apple TV, it is possible to run OSX on it. As for being able to point to a network location instead of an iTunes library, I'd imagine that would be extremely complicated with the limitations Apple put on the Apple TV.

yea ive heard about hacking it. but i was more thinking of taking the HD out, hooking it up via firewire, locating a library itunes file (if it even exists, which i think it would because apple is apple) and just replacing it..

I'd say it is both. You don't need a computer at all to start renting movies etc.
You don't have to have iTunes to rent movies, but you also don't have to have iTunes open to play movies on your Apple TV that you had synced previously. I sync and then watch movies most of the time because I don't like to have to leave my MacBook open in order to play movies.

I have got a LOT more utility out of my Apple TV from watching movie DVDs I have used Handbrake to rip and convert to MP4 files than I ever did from renting HD movies from Apple at five bucks a pop.

Don't get me wrong, the reason I bought my Apple TV in the first place was its ability to let me rent and watch HD movies. It was an important breakthrough and I used to do it a lot but have since shifted to watching movies that I have ripped from my DVDs most of the time.

set all sync settings for movie and music to custom sync. then select nothing on your itunes settings for your atv.

in your itunes library, have all your movies, either on your hard drive or on your NAS (i use the dlink 323 and will upgrade to the 4 bay one when it arrives).

then just stream your content from itunes to your atv. only thing i store on atv is the atv os and pictures. the rest is streamed directly to it. all your content will show up if you have these settings. my atv is connected via CAT5 to my network, along with my computer and NAS, all on gigabit ethernet.

no jitters, unless i'm doing some heavy traffic somewhere else on the network.

thats a really good way of implementing that!

i like your thinking.

i was gonna grab a mini though, connect external HD's up to it then share from there. neato

Is your network N or G? I have a G network, but my macbook and the apple tv are N. I'm guessing G will be too slow?

G is awsome for music and stuff, but for some movies, anything over 2mbps it starts to get a bit jittery.

say for instance, i have streamed a dvd from computer->computer with tiny jitters. i think the DVD stream rate is about 3mbps...so u know..

I have all N. However, I had wires run already so I have CAT5 running, and everything is Gigabit Ethernet. So, the pipe is nice and fat, at least internal to the home.

Um, the appletv is not gigabit ethernet afaik. Its 10/100 only.

the question was about my network. the network is all gigabit ethernet. yes, ATV is 10/100.

with all the free time you have, i'll leave you to debate the merits of a gigabit ethernet vs a 10/100 network and how it affects speed/streaming under a variety of test conditions (rental vs different people on the network downloading items vs backups running etc) while the atv does its job. my observation of my atv is under all these conditions: no hiccups, streaming from my windows xp box running itunes, or while rental is downloading it plays flawlessly.... i hope this information is helpful.

Lighten up, Why the need to be so cynical? Dynaflash provides a wealth of information regarding the :apple:TV here on these forums as well as one of the developers for HandBrake, the application that we all have come to find indispensable. His input is greatly appreciated.

I have a similiar setup and I have had some very frustrating problems with jittery playback. I did what you suggested and BOOM! Everything is working fine!

I have discovered that if you are streaming movies to the ATV, iTunes shoves the movie to the ATV as fast as it can until it is all over on the ATV. For my Mac Mini (host of my iTunes movies files), the network performance for anything else crawls to a halt. I can't access the web or do anything else network related until the movie finishes transfering to the ATV. It really makes me wish the Mini had the "N" version of Wifi!

Hi forgot to tell that I am not using iTunes to stream it but I actually use ATVfiles to stream my movies from my external harddisk, however the movies are not running smoothly :(
