There is one way that this story isn't BS, and is how he is explaining it. If the guy really did find an iPhone from a country that allows factory unlocking, and it didn't have a passcode, he could bring it to apple and they would unlock it for any carrier. But it would need to be from a country that allows unlocking the iPhone, and I doubt they would do it if there was a passcode.

ok guys.
i've read all your posts.
you're right i guess i've explained this thing really confusing... when i used the term "brick" i know iphones can't really get bricked these days. since you can put it in DFU mode and do a restore. when i said brick i meant that your iphone would look like this...

iphone_itunes_connect.jpg

anyways, i think most of you are right. it might have just been the passcode and not an official unlock. i'll ask him about this. like i said my friend isn't tech savvy so when he said unlocked he could have meant they by passed the passcode.

fyi.he works at a club, he found the phone. turned it into the bar. their policy is if the owner doesn't claim it by the end of the night the person who found the item can do what they want with it. so he kept it. those are his morals not mine. i'm not saying it was right. but that is what he did.

and i already know how to unlock and jailbreak the iphone whether it is stolen or purchased legitimately so i don't need to "know" how to do it.. this isn't a post where i try to figure out how to unlock a phone... this is an actual story.

What's the name of this club? I want to make sure to never go somewhere that has a crappy policy like that. I wonder what they do with the credit cards that people may leave when they forget to close out their open tab. "If you were the bartender, you get to keep the card and charge whatever you want on it if they don't come back by last call". Quality.

Hey,

My friend found an iPhone. It was locked. He tried to put his sim and it didn't work. So he straight up called Apple on their customer care number and he told them that he found an iphone and he couldn't use it. so the Apple CSR told him to plug it into his computer and after some time the CSR said it was unlocked and he could use it now???

I'm not one to doubt my friend because i'm sure he wouldn't make this up. but WTF? can't everyone just do this then?

AND the craziest part is the phone was firmware 3.0
and just yesterday he wanted to jail break and upgrdae to 3.0.1

i told him that i would have to re-unlock it because the software usually bricks the phone... so i upgraded firmware on itunes... and NOTHING happend.
it didn't brick or anything.. the update went smoothly and then i just jail broke it without an unlock..

WTF? because everytime i update my iphone, it get's bricked again. and i have to unlock it again.. it's annoying to say the least.

SO, how come when apple unlocks it, it doesn't brick? i'm sure the devteam could figure this problem out? or is it just way too compliated for the devteam to do?

I never have to re-unlock mine either and i used the dev teams software everytime when i upgrade.

Well, the right thing to do is to turn it over to the Police Department and if no one claims it in 30 days, the Police Property Room notifies you to come down and pickup your "FOUND" property....:(

guys. you know what. don't act all righteous. don't act as if you guys have never done anything illegal or unmoral. what my friend does is his business. he's a grown person. if that is the clubs policy then that is their policy.

and if you have a problem with this, make your own thread and you can discuss that there. for the thread topic refer to my first post.
