Apple's second-generation Vision Pro headset with the M5 chip could launch as late as 2026, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that the second-generation Vision Pro headset will focus on internal changes such as an upgrade to the as-yet-unannounced M5 chip. This device is now reportedly in active development and Gurman expects it to arrive "between the fall of 2025 and spring of 2026." Earlier this month, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo similarly said that Apple is planning to release an updated Vision Pro with the M5 chip and Apple Intelligence support in 2025.

The current, first-generation Vision Pro headset contains the M2 chip, which launched in 2022. By 2026, Apple's "M6" chips will likely already be on the horizon. A recent report from The Information suggested that the second-generation Vision Pro will largely re-use stockpiled parts from the first-generation model with "limited changes to its physical design."

Gurman added that Apple has signed up its employees to help evaluate the smart glasses market and how consumers feel about it. This includes devices such as Snapchat Spectacles and Meta Ray-Bans, which let users record video, make phone calls, and listen to music. Gurman speculated that Apple could create a version of its AirPods in a glasses form factor.

There's clearly internal wrangling happening on what form a second generation of this should take.

Personally I think it would be a smart move to introduce a second stripped back model which is used tethered to a Mac as quickly as possible which take the processing out of the device, reduces weight and significantly cost. And just spec bump the existing untethered Vision Pro. Then it will be interesting to see where people go.

If they can get this sub $1000 and more comfortable to use as an ultra wide Mac monitor, which is being described as its first killer feature, I can see this being quite popular. I know I'd certainly consider picking one up.

I also think working on a Mac suits this sort of device well as people tend to work alone and by it's very nature as 'headphones for the eyes' it doesn't present a problem of being isolated other uses such as watching films or sports presents.

I expect a complete overhaul of the product to get it to a slightly lower price level, and remove features that aren't used very often or is superflous (Such as the front eye display). Similar to the iPad 1 to iPad 2 redesign.

Well the product is very expensive, but actually not really a niche market. The front of the AVP gets dirty all the time, people talking to you and articulate with consumption, dust, perhaps a mosquito you squashed on the screen while watching a movie. This product is the perfect addition to the line of products where we can trust on our beloved gray squared with rounded edges piece of cloth, the apple cleaning cloth. When this second version gets released is it also compatible with the first generation apple cleaning cloth, or do we need a second generation ?

It could have an M8 Pro Max and it wouldn’t matter. The form factor isn’t going to be suitable for mass market
Yup. Some people want to spend a lot of time talking about the AVP specs, while most of us understand none of that matters if only a few are ever compelled to buy it and actually use it regularly.

I mean there are probably two products here:
  • This thing with no front glass (i.e. shed the weight and $ of that front display). Put an M4 in it and open up VR gaming.
  • AR glasses that are controlled as a HUD display by the iphone (minimal compute in glasses, minimal battery). Add airpods and you have what you need without housing it all.

These products all sound like things we aren’t asking for or need. And the fact they are already pedaling the M5 AVP and the current OS is a joke says a lot. They feel adrift in their product development. The iPad should be able to run Mac OS and so should the AVP.

Apple needs to double down on the OS and the quality of software more than anything.

Getting ready to sell one of the two AVPs we bought off already as it just collects dust.

Hit the nail on the head. It seems the software development teams at Apple no longer talk to each other. macOS is forgotten about until just before WWDC, then it takes a year to get the functionality delivered and stable.

macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, audioOS, visionOS, iOS, carPlay, etc. What a mess.

I use my AVP for hours every day, 7 days a week. I have to wipe the front of it, maybe, every third day. So, this appears to be a you problem.

Keep your greasy little fingers off the front of the AVP. Don't fry bacon while wearing it. It is it really that difficult to treat your $3500 piece of equipment like it cost $3500?

It needs apps, not a new model.

Native Vision Pro apps for basic pages/Final Cut/etc. would be a start.

Apple - software, not hardware first please.
Fix audio streaming so we can mirror without any blips too.
Enable Atmos/DTS over airplay for home cinemas.

Do the simple things before releasing a new version.

LMAO. You didn't ask for it. You don't need it. But you bought two? LMAO.

BTW, Apple is not peddling an M5 AVP. This is a rumor site.

Tethered would be useless.

At least I was worried about Apple Silicon chips being updated on a worst schedule than Intel. I couldn't be more wrong, and I'm happy to admit.

M4 was just released, M5 seems to be a few months away and we're already hearing about M6.

Oh No… I was hoping that I will buy 4-5 AVP 2 for the family this Christmas, including a AVP Mini for the upcoming baby.

Tethered would be useless.

In what way? To be it addresses the main complaints of the current device which are that it's too heavy making it uncomfortable to wear for long periods and too expensive. And from what I'm seeing a big part of the use is sat at a desk working on a Mac. If you could have something which is lighter and cheaper while delivering the same experience while on a Mac surely that is worth considering?

And if you want an all in one device with a battery I'd keep the current device around with a spec bump.
