Interesting that, for their m9700 Notebook, Alienware does a Product Comparison with MacBook Pro 17" and HPdv8000t

link

MacBook Pro is a gaming rig???

PS Watch that HP notebook very very carefully:
dv8000t -> deviate thousand T -> Deviate T-1000 :eek:
That's Da Terminator Code ;)

What's the clock speed of that AMD 64 bit processor?

Depends on what you want, not some commitee. You can pick and choose.

You can choose from 1.8, 2, 2.2 or 2.4 GHz - $300 dollar spread in price..

Also interesting that Dell is offering Core Duo processors and up to 4GB RAM upgrade in the XPS M1710, while Alienware is only putting out AMD Turion single core and max 2GB RAM in the m9700.

It looks like Dell is making sure the top gaming rigs have a Dell label

Given Apple's positioning of their laptops as light, cool(ish) and long-lasting, I don't think dual graphics cards are going to be an option in the immediate future.

It does pose the question: who is Apple positioning against in the MacBook Pro line when drawing up their hardware specs? Or do they go simply by price point?

Well eventhough the Dell does have dual core, the dual GPUs will own the dells face in gaming, and 2GB is plenty for like any game on the market, esp if you have a 2.4GHz 64bit CPU+SLI 7900's

Well, I don't know. The Macbook Pro looks like a tool box and the Macbook looks like a makeup kit from the 60s. :p
It doesn't look like a tool box, but sure acts like one. It has all the tools I need in one package, Photoshop, iWork, FCP and has bluetooth and airport. It has great sound, (ideal for listening to iTunes whilst working on the move), a fantastic non-glare screen, (which most who see prefer to the glossy I might add), a great build quality and is extremely portable.

If only all tool boxes looked and worked this good.

Just have to remember here in the Mac world gaming is suppose to be a No No:D Blame it on lame hardware, blame it on lame ports, blame it on Windows. Still its interesting how many MacHeads visit the games section here at Rumors for such a taboo.:) Lets face it hardware wise the dual SLI m9700 has the juice. An unlike Apple they let you choose that video one or two 7900s,choose that CPU to fit you ,not some marketing dept with guys holding hands who still dont game.:D When it comes to hardware Alienware dont play!. Now if we could just get the Mac OS for AMD.

Since when does os matter for gaming? I mean you click on the link (in dock, startmenu, or desktop) and go right into full screen. Your not even running anything in the background if your smart. If anything, windows is better for top of the line games (efficiency wise) and they have them all, sometimes cheaper.

New buyer considering either Alienware m9700 or MacBook Pro!?

Little bit of feedback from an Alienware fan too:

I'd also throw this out to you. The days of Mac being "a safe bet" against viruses is rapidly coming to an end. More and more viruses are being coded for Macs these days. Speaking of which, anyone else seen those new Mac commercials? The hip guy (Mac) talking with the other fat guy (PC)? Those get such a laugh out of me.

Having said that, asking for advice on which one to buy in the Alienware Forum is a bit like someone asking whether they should buy an Apple or a Dell at MacRumors....:D

And there's me thinking that there were still NO viruses for MacOS X? Maybe a trojan or two tops, but no viruses. Some people are so bloody stupid.
