Updating hardware once a year has little to do with existing owners and convince them to buy a new and better product. It's all about expanding the market share and keeping up to competition. Who does'nt update his products once in a while, will be forgotten. Especially products that have lots of competition like the smartwatch.

Spot on and Samsung is putting out 3 or 4 a year. In almost all consumer electronics anything over about 18 months old is considered outdated. If the aWatch is successful and Apple didn't update it about once a year it would be FAR worse than just "forgotten". Apple would be criticized in the tech press as 'falling behind' and questioned 'is Apple losing it's edge'.

They should do this model:

1 - keep the same models forever (externally)

2 - add new box models from time to time (add options to buy, e.g. with a round face, with a square sides, g-shock style, etc...)

3 - update the internals silently (like they do with the mac)

This is what Porsche does, and it's a proven successful model for high-end items that beat luxury offerings.

Forever is a long long time my friend.

Remember Porsche, the one you were talking about was a design that was changed again and again and again whilst cars were being developed till they came up with the shape you are talking about.

Or do you feel all cars should look like a Model T Ford forever?

Not really. How old is the Rolex Submariner?

I'm not talking about keeping the same product forever, but maintaining the shell.

Remember Porsche, the one you were talking about was a design that was changed again and again and again whilst cars were being developed till they came up with the shape you are talking about.

But they are all basically the same. The 993-996 jump was remarkable, with the lighter tail and radiators, but they are all the same car.

Or do you feel all cars should look like a Model T Ford forever?

Cars are different, the form is also the function.

Probably Every Two Years... Here's Why

There's no need to release a new smart watch every year. At least not from a logical point of view. From a sales point, obviously a new one would be released at least every 11-13 months. But logically, the technology can't increase over every year to warrant that many people buying a new Apple Watch every year, not in the same way that the technology in phones, iPads, MacBooks, and Macs is enhanced every 12-20 months.

You don't know what technologies Apple have planned for version 2,3 or greater. Just as you would not have back when the original iPhone or iPad was released. Sensor technology might increase, ability to make it thinner and lighter, stand alone technology....the list of possibilities are endless. You can be sure Apple probably are working on version two even now!why would the technology inside a watch be different than a phone? Both are basically computers aren't they...

The point here is that this is all guesswork. I'm sure they are working on a second watch and ideas for it. That doesn't mean that it has to come out a year after the first one. Development on products is allowed to take more than a year. There's no law anywhere dictating that Apple must release a new product once a year has passed.

My point is that this is a very new area, and there's no way to tell at what rate the technology will be updated to provide for a new model, which is why my guess is that at least the first cycle will run for two years.

Samsung putting out three or four products in any category any year occurs because Samsung is frightened of falling farther behind Apple in any category. They need to keep moving to hold onto their ever shrinking view of the backside of Apple's train of success.
