Doesn't look like the Apple Watch 3 w/ LTE is ready for prime time yet.

The Verge:

APPLE WATCH SERIES 3 WITH LTE REVIEW: MISSED CONNECTIONS
You should still call me on my cellphone

You can’t rest easy with the Apple Watch 3 yet, because that seamlessness, that so-called magic, isn’t there. The stutters during the handoff from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi to LTE shouldn’t happen. The music streaming? It isn’t there yet. A built-in podcast streaming option? Also not there. A reliable Siri? Nope, not in my experience.

... Considering that my Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE (both first and second review units) didn’t function like it was supposed to, I can’t recommend buying it — and paying the monthly cell fee — based on promises. I know I’m not.

SCORE: 5

GOOD STUFF
  • Option for LTE
  • Faster processor
  • watchOS 4 (not specific to this hardware)

BAD STUFF
  • Cellular connectivity problems
  • Apple Music streaming not working yet
  • Unreliable Siri
  • Notable battery drain with LTE

Ouch. And following the review, this article:

Apple admits to Apple Watch LTE problems just before it ships

Within the first couple days of experiencing this, Apple replaced my first review unit with a second one, but that one proved to be problematic, too.

Eventually, the company issued an official statement, acknowledging the issue. “We have discovered that when Apple Watch Series 3 joins unauthenticated Wi-Fi networks without connectivity, it may at times prevent the watch from using cellular,” an Apple spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We are investigating a fix for a future software release.”

Even though there are a handful of reviews with the opposite position of the Verge’s, seeing this sentiment expressed in multiple initial reviews was enough to have me cancel my Series 3 w/LTE preorder. While i’d love to be able to go ‘phone free’ in many situations, my current AW/iPhone setup is working great, including more than adequate battery life (2+ days between charge if necessary) and I don’t see any need to suffer through connectivity/battery issues while Apple tries to figure this out.

So as it stands right now, only new Apple product for me from this launch is a 4K Apple TV.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Left my iPhone at home connected to my home wifi. At work I have my AW connected to my Note 8. Everything works perfectly so far, even getting my work phone to ring hangouts and getting the alert on my AW. So far this is doable. My concern now is battery life, but a couple hours in I don't notice the Note 8 suffering much in battery life. The AW seems to be a bit low so that may be an issue, took it off the charger at 8am and it's currently at 86%, where normally it would be in the mid to low 90%.

What do you mean by your work phone calling hangouts?

My work phone is a google voice number, so I have it tied into hangouts. When my work phone rings I see the alert and caller ID on my iPhone and AW. It's nice when I'm out of the office, I can answer the call or just let it go to voicemail. With my setup today the AW gives me that hangouts notification, I can still answer on my Note 8, but it's nice to see the caller ID on the AW and decide if I want to answer without having to take my phone out.

So if the Note 8 rings normally will the Apple Watch alert you?

Yes and no. For my Verizon number, no because my Verizon SIM is now in the Note 8 and the AW is still connected to the iPhone. But for my Google Voice number yes it does. The vast majority of my phone use is on my GV number, with only a small amount of immediate family using my Verizon number. I've been meaning to switch them over to GV as well now that GV has group messaging and MMS. I still have to resolve facetime, but I think if I install something like Skype on the iPhone and my note 8 and associate them with the same account, it should work.

Hmm doesn’t sound like it will work in the UK then? Having the watch alert when a phone call is incoming with the name of the caller etc is one of the main things I want amongst others.

No I don't think that will happen, unless you either 1) use Google voice (which I'm unsure if available outside of the US, or 2) can somehow have the same number on 2 phones.

The functionality is definitely limited. Mostly notifications, apps that can run remotely and fitness features. Still pretty awesome IMO though.

The caveat is it seems it's a big hit to battery life. My Note 8 is down to 78% with fairly moderate use, and the AW is down to 61%.

Hmm grumble grumble grumble will have to go check out the X now... not giving up the features I want from my Apple Watch. Have to say though so far iOS 11 is friggin awesome!

Out of curiosity what in iOS11 do you like so much? I don't see very much, if any, difference from iOS10.

Just to confirm, Apple Pay works perfectly with the iPhone at home. Also for some weird reason my iPhone with no SIM card was still getting imessages, but I'd get them as SMS on the Note 8 also, and the AW gave me the alerts from the iPhone at home. Seems like a bug, but it was working.

Your idea might be possible...

Hmm, I think combined with the android as a hotspot that might work well and help the battery life. For me calls on the AW are useless as I have my phone with me all the time.

So any update on this at all? Any more features found to work like when your phone rings your Apple Watch buzzes and tells you who’s calling?

Well I returned my Note 8, so no further experimenting. Honestly it worked much better than I thought and I think I could do it full time with an android phone. I'm planning on staying with iOS for now though.

That was cool experiment. It's what gave me the idea to put my iPhone SE back into service if I ever want to make the Android my main device and keep the little friendly SE for iMessage and Apple news. I'd still have two phones but the Android could do all the heavy lifting so to speak.

However I am still very happy with my 7 Plus and I don't mind carrying two phablets around most of the time. So I'm good for now.

Thanks you for what you did though, I’m guessing their is no way to make the watch ring when your phone does? Apart from that google thing you mentioned?

I would think so, the AW will only pick up if the iPhone is ringing, which it wouldn't if it didn't have an account with a SIM. Now the cellular AW may be different, I don't know. Maybe if you get a cellular plan for it and tie it into the iPhone, but then switch the iPhone SIM to an android phone it may still work.

Hmm interesting, I still have my Nexus 5 around so maybe I’ll have a play.
Another question though is how do you find the camera on the iPhone Plus 8 compared to the Note 8?

I still only have the 7+, but I find it very compatible with the Note 8. I'm not a huge photography guy, most of today's flagships take super good pictures and I get bored trying to look for such tiny minutiae that I see a lot looking for. It's a picture, it's not blurry, it's got great resolution and color, enjoy it!!

The s3 is HUGE compared to the AW, even the 42mm. It also runs Tizen, which has only a fraction of the apps iOS and android have. I'm also hesitant on the heart rate sensor as I've always found Samsung to have poor ones, but never tested the S3. I know my AW HR sensor is pretty darn excellent.

I am late to this thread, but wanted to throw you a different idea. I wore the Apple Watch gen 0 every day for 2 years until I got the Note 8. I was very concerned about continuing to have a smartwatch, because I perceived that Apple Watch was so much better. I would never have gone to the extent that you have... to have a dedicated iPhone just to manage the watch.

I went with the Gear S3 Frontier, having never touched one other than 5 minutes one time in a Best Buy. I am delighted with the switch from AW to S3.

There are two areas that the AW is better - 1) complications, which are cool with integrating apps into watch faces, and 2) more 3rd party apps. When I evaluated my usage of AW, I did have some 3rd party apps, but none of them did I use a lot, and in all cases they weren't really anything that I had to have vs. just using my phone. They were novelty more than anything else.

For everything else, I prefer the S3. First, the UI and navigation is way more intuitive, and the rotating dial is so much better. I use the watch in the gym, and with sweaty hands I hated the AW. I can use the S3 while running no problem. I also like that it looks like a real watch. It is not small, but its also similar size to regular watches. My daughter, who isn't very big, has a G-Shock and a Michael Kors that look almost identical in every way to the S3 Frontier. I like that there are thousands of watch faces. that add to that look and keep it fresh. Watch bands... uses regular ones.

For the gym, I can take just the watch now. I use Spotify to put my music on there and use the Samsung fitness app to do the rest. I've gotten texts and calls while at the gym and they transfer fine. I love the experience compared to AW.

For sleeping, I wear the S3 ... never wore the AW. It automatically tracks my sleep. I don't have to do anything. I can also turn off the alarm on my Note 8 from the watch.

For payments, the S3 has Samsung Pay that works in way more places than Apple Pay. I've started just leaving my phone in the car because the watch works better for payments, and I an communicate. Unlike AW, I can type a text on a keyboard on the watch. Phone calls are also clear.

Your list of things in the original post were all built in native functions. You didn't mention any apps. I would highly recommend you give the Gear S3 a try.

I liked the Note 8 camera when I tried it in store, I haven’t found iPhones to be the best lately, I’ve not owned the 7 or 8 Plus yet though so I was curious.

Definitely a consideration if it wasn't so huge. I love my AW in the gym, does its job perfectly and is rated to be one of the most accurate, if not the most accurate heart rate sensor in the industry (at least compared to other smartwatches). I do a lot of interval training and really need the HR sensor to be spot on, especially with rapid intensity changes.

I also have one of my AW's connected to my regular analog watch, my Frankenwatch, and love the setup so would hate to get rid of it. I have a 38mm SS one connected to my watch that I wear every day and a 42mm black SS one that I use only for the gym, sleeping, weekends, etc.

Not sure what you mean by Frankenwatch???

Size is definitely a personal choice. From a distance, the Gear S3 looks nearly the same as my daughter's G-Shock and Michael Kors watches that are both black with black bands. They are all roughly the same size and shape. She's a pretty thin, and the style seems to be the larger watches. Also, was in the gym and the girl stretching next to me had a Garmin smartwatch, and from a short distance I thought it was a Gear S3 Frontier at first glance.

Been using the AW3 Cellular and my Pixel exclusively since it arrived from google.

Works great, retains a cellular connection when out of known wifi, and battery life has been great (still 67% at end of day). It is also the only way that I can send / receive iMessages when out and about with just my Android phone.

I like it, but, it isn’t for everyone, and you need a newer iPhone to set it up.

Yep my frankenwatch, thus the need to keep the smart watch small. But even if I just wore it regularly the s3 is still too big.
