Sadly, as I feared, Apple when faced with a flood of costly replacements due to the faulty screens, will NO LONGER replace nor repair the faulty yellow screens. Instead, they'll first deny the problem, and if you don't accept that, they'll offer a refund. BUT NO FIX, AND NO REPLACEMENT!

They don't have a fix, and may never have. BUMMER!!

All according to an internal Apple memo to their service reps that Gizmodo got ahold of.

Isn't a refund as good as a replacement? Can't you just buy a new iMac with your refund, or they won't let you do that?

From teh memo:

"Do not attempt a repair or replacement at this time. Explain that slight color variability is normal for LCD displays and and in general does not warrant replacement.[...] Customers who require immediate resolution should be offered a refund".

This is not the way to do it Apple...

Many switchers will be mad because of this and maybe avoid buying Apple product again. Hopefully Apple will realize that they have to tighten their quality control as this is absolutely ridiculous

Where you edited the quote, read the next line!!!!

The memo clearly states they will replace the panels or refund.

If the diagnosis of the problem in that article is correct, then panel replacement may be the ONLY way to properly repair this. If it is true that the yellow is caused by panel misalignment during shipping, then continual exchanges will not solve the problem (they will all get misaligned during shipping). Replacing the panel in an Apple Store will mean that there is little possibility of shipping damage, thus giving one an aligned panel and making the issue resolved. Still sux that a new product needs to be fixed OTB.

Yes, but why lie that there is no problem in the first place? Why urge the CSR folks to try and BS customers into accepting this as "NORMAL VARIABILITY"???

Because IT IS NORMAL VARIABILITY. I've not seen one iMac photo on these forums that shows me anything other than normal panel variance. Yes it sucks to not have a completely perfect iMac panel, but they don't exist, from any manufacturer.

Well, why lie about Apple NOT repairing yellow screens?

How is that a lie - if I need to have an iMac fixed today or next week, what would happen? Would they fix it? NO!! First they'll lie and try and bully me into saying my eyes are deceiving me, and then finally offer a refund. BUT NO FIX OR REPLACEMENT. And that's the truth.

The portion you edited out makes a big difference.
1. You *can* get it repaired -- in three weeks, but not immediately
2. This implies (not unequivocally) that there is a fix but it is going to take time.
3. If (2) is true then an "manual" exchange is a good thing to try: Get a refund, wait 3+ weeks, reorder.

I called Apple today. They said in 3 weeks they will call me to do a LCD replace. I don't know where you got this information from.

Balderdash !

You need to have them old eyes looked at mate,
You can clearly see in three weeks Apple will be more than happy to replace and or repair for a customer <---Based on this apparent "Apple Memo"--->

Very misleading title mate, you should not strike fear into the community members like that.

Even if you drug me, you will never be able to convince me that the variability shown in the posts below are normal.

Who in their right mind would call that normal? It's not!

So once again, because no monitor is perfect, no monitor is bad?

There are unusually colored iMacs screens that Apple should replace, just ask Sir Cecil, he returned one. :)

I own a DELL U2410, an IPS screen made by LG using the same production process of the 27" iMac screen, I would say that 95% of all DELL'U2410 suffer from the same problem too, and you know what DELL's stance on the issue is::

"Problem: Complaints of Pink or Green Tint on U2410 display

Note: All received captures were tested and are within manufacturer specifications for Color Gradation. Because this is a normal panel characteristic and not a hardware failure, exchanges will no longer be offered for this complaint since a dispatch of another display cannot be guaranteed to resolve the complaint."

There you go.

Thanks for posting that up panz, I now know to stay away from any Dell monitor with an LG panel in it.

Maybe everybody needs to lower the color standards for monitors with LG panels in them, since they appear to suck.

Not true, I brought my week 46 27" i5 into the Menlo Park NJ store yesterday:

1) The teach noticed the tint
2) First he said any repair will not fix the problem as it will come back
3) Then after some reading then claimed it was normal and did not warrant a replacement

>>> I said whoa...and called BS, then said I didn't spend two grand for a computer that will have re-occuring problems or yellow tinted displays.

He said hold on and went into the back for a moment and returned, saying after reading some notes a replacement will solve the problem.

I have an order for a new i5, not a display replacement, and would be happy to post a pic if you want.

Don't take their $H!T, there is always a lot of people in the store; the slightest raise of your voice and the will give you what you want.

Why post such misinformation? Nowhere has Apple said it will "NO LONGER" repair the screens. They have simply said that their fix will be at least another three weeks coming, at which time they will repair the machines. In the meantime, without a fix, it's obvious that there's no point "repairing" the problem now.
And how are they "denying the problem" when they are presently informing people they will contact them as soon as the fix is available?

Why post such misinformation?

It's not misinformation - I linked to the memo (via Gizmodo).

Nowhere has Apple said it will "NO LONGER" repair the screens.

1)They used to repair the screens. The threads here are filled with people who had Apple try to repair their screens (usually unsuccessfully).

2)Per this memo, they will at this point not repair nor replace.

Hence, I say NO LONGER (because they used to). And if you go by that memo, it urges their associates to no longer try to repair or replace the screen or computer. That is indisputably what it says now. What may happen in the future - who knows, and we'll see; after all, the next revision may not have this problem. But we are not talking about next year, or next Christmas or next month. We are talking about here and now. And now it is: NO REPAIR AND NO REPLACEMENT.

And how are they "denying the problem" when they are presently informing people they will contact them as soon as the fix is available?

I'll quote again: "Do not attempt a repair or replacement at this time. Explain that slight color variability is normal for LCD displays and and in general does not warrant replacement."

Deny, deny, deny that there is a problem - "it's all within spec" and what you see does not warrant replacement. QED.
