Doesn't Apple give you an extended grace period to signup for AppleCare? Best Buy is an authorized reseller, it shouldn't be a problem adding Apple Care directly from Apple after the sale.
And the standard is still 60 days on an iPhone/iPad. You can complain and cause a scene and someone will have to approve a post 60-day request. It's not like anyone can walk in with a perfectly working iPhone on day 364 and waltz out with AppleCare+ with zero questions or hassle.
They changed it recently. Can add AppleCare Plus to iPhone any time up to one year. Obviously has to be inspected.

Cool. It reads pretty cut and dry, but there was never a follow up post. The policy *can* be extended past day 60, but it requires some up the chain decisions. The current, April 2017 policy says 60.

So it's a bit misleading to just say "nah, you have a year!" when you really have 60 days. There is no guarantee you have a year as they are handled on a case by case basis. If it's pristine, you have the original sales receipt, and are a nice person, they may very well let you buy AC+ after 60 days. If you just walk in with a perfectly working phone on day 263, they don't have to help you and will likely point to their written policy I posted above.

That also says 60 days for iPhones which someone else here mentioned is 1 year, so if going to push the 60 day limit it may be wise to contact Apple directly for clarification. I too thought you got a 1 year period to buy it with just about every device or computer, but maybe they changed that or maybe they just never updated their documentation.

iOS devices have always been 60 days...and they still are. Computers are 1-yr from purchase, although the new Applecare+ for computers is 60 day as well.
Fact is, you *may* be able to get Applecare+ added after 60 days and before 1-yr on an iOS device, but it's not a standing offer to all. It would be up to the individual store and manager decision (i.e. escalations).
Anyone just saying it's available to all within a year is spreading misinformation. Don't believe me? Walk into a store and try.
I know from the Apple rep at Best Buy that AppleCare Plus can be added within 60 days to an iPad purchased from them. This information is about 2 months old and confirmed with store staff.
