Recently Apple support for my iPad expired. Within 3 months my screen cracked. One option given from the support supervisor: buy a new iPad at a modestly reduced price. No repair could be offered! No other options.

In contrast, my Fitbit watch has a rubber watch band that started to peal right at the edge of the one year warranty. Their response? Took my word for it, said to keep the old watch and sent me a brand new one for no cost, free! They agreed the band was defective, sight unseen! Great experience.

What gives Apple? Why should I buy Applecare?

Because Apple Care extends the warranty past one year and covers more things--such as a certain amount of accidental drops. Technically, the standard 1 year coverage on the device doesn't cover cracked screens, which are usually caused by drops or impact of some kind. So even if your "free" year hadn't expired, they still might have chosen not to just replace your cracked screen without at least seeing it first to figure out what happened.

I have, on multiple occasions, experienced excellent AppleCare support.

You, in fact, just offered another example of how well Apple handles customer concerns. They offered you a modest discount on a new iPad after you broke the one you had. That's pretty amazing. They are under no obligation to help you. I realize having the screen break on your iPad sucks. It's upsetting - no doubt. I feel for you, but I would not fault Apple.

Absolutely no sympathy from us. Either buy a new one or go somewhere else and see what kind of warranty you get from them after your warranty expires.

I wanted to add one more thing. If you paid with a credit card, check to see if they offer extended warranty. You may be able to get the replacement reimbursed by your credit card company. It's worth checking into it.

Well considering the Fitbit had the defect it was replaced it was a known issue, meanwhile cracking a iPad screen isn't a defect its negligence. Your warranty also expired what do you honestly expect but comparing that to the Fitbit which from your had a defect isnt even a proper comparison. Accidental Damage is a lot different from a defect.

Perhaps watch band peeling is a known or common problem as opposed to cracked screens?

My radio module went our on my Ford truck one month after the bumper to bumper warranty expired. I paid to have it replaced even though it was obviously defective. You should do the same with your iPad even though It was likely your fault. Things happen.

At least offer a repair, which i'd pay for, especially considering an extended warranty was purchased and never used.

You're being really vague about the circumstances.
  1. What model iPad did you buy?
  2. When did you buy it?
  3. Did you actually buy AppleCare+ for it?
  4. How exactly did the screen get cracked?

So you expect them to just give out free iPads to whoever damages their iPad after the warranty period expired?

This guy must be from "Entitled Land". Wonder if he's just trolling? Truly an amazing rant...

It likely costs as much to repair a cracked screen as it does to have you buy a new one at a discount, considering available parts, labor, and shipping costs.

Not to mention the Fitbits, such as the Fitbit Flex which sold for $99.95, costs under $18 to manufacture. Telling a customer to keep it and shipping a new one really isn't that much of an expense by Fitbit :)

Ipad 9.7" Teardown was like $375 in 2012, at least. I believe current out of warranty replacement is $379? So they are basically doing out of warranty replacement for what it costs them to manufacture it.

Wait, your warranty has expired and you had to pay for repairs, so one shouldn't buy Applecare?
Huh?

Sell your iPad, get another fitbit. Make yourself happy.
