This is probably correct unless there has been a change in components prices and availability. Not sure if any recent tear downs or testing has been done on more recently manufactured units.

Although a non issue for the majority of users, those who are interested or do an unusual amount of large file transfers will probably know already.

But this thing not only happens to laptops but also SSD themselves. Manufacturers have been known to swap chips depending on availability, resulting in different speeds (lower and higher) compared to initial reviews and in some cases official marketing and documentation.
The thing is, if your work involves large file transfers, then 256 ain't right for you anyway. Remember the "slow" SSD is 1.5gb per second. So transferring the entire contents of the SSD is a theoretical less than 3 minutes. Now are you doing that level of transfer multiple times a day and also went out and bought a laptop with 256 of storage?

You’re exactly right, it’s practically a non issue for most. But people still complain about it. And most Apple consumers wouldn’t even know about the situation 😆

An absolute amazing deal. M2 and 16 GB RAM on an ultra thin laptop with practically all day battery runtime. I have the 8 GB base and it suits my needs and plan to keep it many years… but the price of this device now! Just amazing. If you’re after a laptop this is just really amazing value.

I'm glad this is a good product for you! I thought these base models were e-waste, like the kit lens on cameras, and should not be made, but nice to see that there is a market <3

I bought my 1TB 16GB Starlight on release.

Fantastic Mac, and at the mentioned price, you are practically bending them over!

Go for it, if you haven't got one.

You mean that Amazon.com introduced this deal today. Good luck finding a similar deal in Canada, or anywhere else for that matter. Why the assumption that everybody reading the post is in the US? (Don’t worry, it’s rhetorical. We know why.)
yep, here in czechia, for that price (plus tax) i can buy macbook air m1 256/8 :D :D

There was and is a huge market for base models. I suspect most Macs they sell are the base models. The 16 GB RAM version is now a base model. I suppose you think that’s e-waste also??

Your comment is very dismissive of other people’s needs, budgets and choices. Calling a product many people have as e-waste isn’t a compliment at all.

I suspect the vast majority of people will read your comment on here and know exactly what type of person you are.

Have an awesome day!

no it's not, but that 256GB ssd is stretching it... Ok, maybe e-waste is too strong of a word for this. But what I mean, is instead of making decent base level machine, they make it barely good enough. Then people who buy them, can't use it for long. e.g I use my macs minimum 5 years, usually more. And these base level macs, when they can't perform, they are thrown away to get a new one. Instead if Apple sold decent base level configurations, people could use them longer instead of buying new models every few years. Using same product for longer is more sustainable then buying new every few years.

I’ve bought base models because I do my main work on a different platform. And for my use of Mac’s that involves web, productivity and email and consumption the base model lasts me 5 years plus. I’m still using a base model Intel Mac mini still going strong. I’m still using a base model iPad Air and base model iPad mini and a base model iPhone mini.

And you shouldn’t throw old tech away. Be responsible and either sell it to someone who can still have a use for it, or give it away, and if not that send it for recycling.

Apple are a multi trillion dollar company and I think they know more, most of the time, about what a base model should be for the majority of their customers. The only issue recently has been the AI drive that’s caught them short on RAM. But most of the time they have the fundamentals right. Most of their customers are not really pros, just people who are willing to pay a bit extra for the Apple level of quality, design and ecosystem.

Fine that you think 256 GB SSD isn’t enough, but for most people it’s more than enough. If you’re work requirements need more than that, then spec it appropriately or attaches extra storage externally. Everyone is responsible for buying appropriate things for themselves. And if they need help they can ask for it.

If you’re so concerned about the base model maybe become a shareholder and take your concerns to them rather than me, because I don’t really care 😂
