Apple's iPad commands 1% of all web traffic after just one year

A new report indicates the iPad now holds a 1 percent share of global web browsing, more than 50 times greater than its closest competitor.

Recent statistics from analytics firm Net Applications' NetMarketShare report show the iPad has continued to grow worldwide since its launch in early 2010. The tablet recently broke the 1 percent mark in worldwide browsing and accounts for 2 percent of browsing in the U.S.

The report showed the iPad to have “53 times the usage share of its nearest competitor,” the Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tab throughout May. Apple's tablet also dwarfed the third-placed Motorola Xoom tablet's share of global web browsing with a share 76 times greater. In addition when compared to the Research in Motion's Blackberry PlayBook, the iPad has roughly 306 times the usage.

In the U.S. mobile browser market, the iPad takes a solid 25.5 percent, only trailing Android (31.6 percent) and the iPhone (35.2 percent). However, when iPhone and iPad data are combined, they take over 60.7 percent of U.S. mobile browsing, a figure almost double that of Android. Blackberry came in at 6.9 percent, while Symbian, Windows Mobile and webOS are left far behind, accounting for less than 0.5 percent.

Net Applications compiles its figures from an "exclusive on-demand network of live stats customers" with more than 160 million visitors per month. The firm also classifies and reports on more than 430 referral sources identified as search engines.

The iPad is expected to continue to pick up steam this fall with the release of iOS 5. The addition of tabbed browsing in Mobile Safari will bring the iPad's browsing experience closer in line to the Mac and could further boost the device's growth as a mobile browsing platform.

Last month, research firm comScore reported that the iPad comprised 89 percent of global tablet traffic. A May survey from Nielsen found Apple's touchscreen tablet held 82 percent of the tablet market in the U.S.

Today also marks 14 months since the iPad first launched in America, further highlighting the success of Apple's venture into the tablet space. Apple announced last month that total sales of the device had topped the 25 million milestone.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The most telling detail:

However, when iPhone and iPad data are combined, they take over 60.7 percent of U.S. mobile browsing, a figure almost double that of Android.

Also remember that iOS is on a limited range of devices.

I, being mildly inebriated, thought this said Apple's iPad commercials were 1% of all web traffic.

You know, like people watching the commercials on Apple.com?

Almost believed it too...

I don't believe it for 1 major reason. Apple commands ~7% of the PC market, or roughly 7% of the internet market. Bit-torrent makes up about 1/3 of that 7%. Therefore, there would have to be about 1/3 as many iPads as there are macs, in order to make up the difference.

I don't think Apple's physically made that many iPads yet, have they?

Has iPod touch been lumped in with the iPhone or is it insignificant at the moment? Seems strangely absent.

I was thinking the same thing honestly. The only place on that chart it can be is in iPhone because no way in hell that iPod going to be less than Symbian.

Also I am kind of wondering how WP7 is doing because that is a pretty good web broswer and having WM at such a low number makes me think that the graph is I am going to guess 6-9 months old.

Consumers need to actually buy them in order to surf the web with them.

I see typical if you to pass over the rest of the post and only insult products that go against apple.

Well it's true. Have to wait for Nokia for anything to really register. It's not an insult. It's reality. Sometimes reality sucks depending on your perspective.

Still does not change the fact you flat out insulting non apple products passed over the part about asking where the iPods fall.
Why I ask about wp7 and believe the pie chart is out dated is worth 7 is selling well enough to grab 2-3% market share. I am not expecting much but far cry from the 0.2

Okay, so iPad users often visit the tiny handful of websites that Net Applications monitors. Without knowing what sites those are, the data doesn't tell us much except what we already know: there's more iPads than any other tablet right now.

Heck, MSN alone gets over 500 million visitors a month. So does Facebook. So do lots of other popular websites. Makes one wonder what sites this company is monitoring where they only get 160 million total reports a month, and what attracts iPad users to them.

Yeah that's exactly what I did.

So what.

I don't know where iPods fall. Since you're so interested why don't you go find out and report back. I'll add it to the OP.

I don't think it's possible for a website to distinguish between iPhone and iPod Touch so I believe it's aggregated under iPhone.

WP7, according to the most recent surveys available, staggers at 1% market share. I highly doubt it will reach 2% in Q2 2011 and I'm very skeptical that the Nokia deal will make it take off significantly. Price point will be to high to healthily compete against iPhone and high-end Android handsets.

The so what part goes back to something I pointed out about you in another thread that you tried to blow off the list of links. I was to lazy to go find example post but low and behold you provided them right here. It rather sad that you pass over it.

We know that the iPod iOS is mobile OS. Since we also know it is going to be high enough to command greater than the .1% that the lowest on there and it is not listed means that it is lumped in with something. Chances are iPhone. These greatly reduces the true spread of market penetration of the browser part compared to Android which is limited only to the phones.

Of course I expect you to glaze right over this fact like you normally do because it hurts Apple and if it hurts Apple you tend to pass over it when you can not argue against it and you bash anything not Apple.

Rodimus Prime, it's very unclear what you're trying to demonstrate.
Fact is mobile devices running iOS make for about 60% of the mobile Internet traffic according to the survey, Android making half of that.

No, you're a hater because you irrationally post against Apple all over the site. Post away, I likes me some entertainment.

How is that different then the blind fanboyism that seems rampart at times.
