As the hymn book says...
"Roll back the curtain
of memory now and then
show me where you brought me from
and where I could have been
im only human and humans forget
so remind me, remind me dear Lord"

hard to believe my first Mac had 128mb of ram and an 867mhz G4. It's easy to get disgruntled with them (like having to fix my kids’ screen time again tonight) but man these current machines are so nice.

The thing that will do away with the standard 8 GB of RAM as the default would be a change in the component cost or availability. One thing that will be consistent is the ability for the user to double the memory for a multiple of $200 USD. The number of people who are willing to spend $200-400 to max out their RAM is staggering and they make a fortune by selling this upgrade.

Funny how it’s been nearly 10 years since I left Apple and the default RAM size is still 8 GB. Then again with certain Macs (‘14 mini) they retrogressively installed 4 GB in the base model. Maybe we’ll see 6/12/24 options This go around.🤣

For people saying that the 13-inch MacBook Pro should go away, just remember some people like the Touch Bar and not everyone likes the designs of the newer MacBook Pros especially with the notch. The only thing they should really change is the bezel size, but the overall design looks way better than the newer MacBooks.

Show of hands: Who can live without the Touch Bar?

If the new M3 series Macs appear in 2023, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
It is probably going to be the iMac since that has been awhile and is still on M1 if M3’s come out this year.

I don’t see the 13” Air getting M3 until spring. M2 Air’s should still be selling well, so no need now, for profits should still be good. “if” it comes out in October, no 15” M3 for now..

13” MacBook Pro possibly..would be interesting to see..

I have the feeling that once I upgrade to an M3 or M4, I’m not going to need a more powerful machine for any of my tasks… but I know Apple will cut macOS support after 6 or 7 years.
Eventually they will probably start rendering 3D text in the menu bar and icons in the dock/desktop in real time just to tax the processors enough to justify killing support for older models.

(In actuality it’ll probably be AI/machine learning features that do these 3nm chips in)

Eh it'll probably be RAM that does it for these systems as they get older. These chips are so ludicrously powerful that I'd be shocked if the CPU/GPU capabilities became the bottleneck first.

You can certainly live without it. But some people prefer having Touch Bar over function keys and some prefer function keys over Touch Bar. It is purely personal preference.

Some people prefer having USB-A ports as well, but they aren't going to get them on any new MacBooks. The touch bar is gone as soon as Apple gets rid of the 13" MacBook Pro.

What struck me most is the fact that Apple is slowly setting apart each chip's computing power. In the M1 series, the base model was more like the Pro, then between the base M2 and M2 Pro, the distance is even more; and now, if that data is confirmed, the difference between chips will be even greater.

Exciting if true.

Also, Apple is probably saving the M3 for a second generation Vision Pro.

But if the rumors are true that we're seeing the new chips this year, it would be awesome if Apple launches the Vision with M3 instead of the announced M2. Though I don't think there's historical precedent of this happening.

Oh well.

I have to disagree with you guys, I think 8GB is becoming too constraint especially on Apple Silicon where the RAM is shared with the entire SoC. The times I’ve tried an M2 MacBook Air, it was pretty easy to get into the yellow memory compression zone. And pushing it a bit more it started swapping like crazy.

I honestly think Apple should upgrade the base memory to 12GB.

They want you to upgrade it - for an exorbitant fee at purchase.
