It's a start, but tech specs without RAM are a bit of a joke.
Apple are extremely secretive about specs like this… especially on Apple Watch.

Plus, the vast majority of consumers wouldn't care… it would be like asking the specs of the SBC in your fridge or washing machine….

the iPhone 13 and 14 are basically the same phone. Same chip, same camera, same display.
Yep, Bluetooth 5.3 and SOS via Satellite is the only differences I can see beyond “action mode” and the “Photonic Engine” which are gimmick software locked features. Allegedly slightly better accelerometer, light sensor, and gyros as well.

I just upgraded from a XS to a refurbished 13 Pro Max (13 probably better value but I wanted the larger screen).

It’s a nice upgrade (5G and Battery improvements are really noticeable) but I would have been happy with my XS for a couple more years.

iPhones just aren’t very exciting these days.

Basically the same watches since foerever!. Which is good, so I dont need to buy a new watch every year to have the new features. :)
I feel that AW is one of the devices that benefits from having more iterative updates—from a consumer standpoint, replacing a watch every single year (unless you’re an absolute Apple devotee) is a waste of money, unlike a phone where in two years’ time (even one year, look at 7 -> X / 3GS -> 4) one could find themselves itching for the new features. I’d imagine Apple benefits from a surge in sales on their particularly groundbreaking models (S4 and S7 come to mind) and that’s likely more than enough for them.

Does it admit that the Series 5-8 and both SE's were all powered by the same SIP and changing the name of the SIP was simply marketing and not because the chips were any faster, power efficient, etc?
Series 5 and SE had the same chip as the series 4, series 6-8 and SE 2 also share the same chip as far as I know.

Can someone explain why they are Wi‑Fi 4 as opposed to something more current like Wi‑Fi 6?
Because every single cent counts when you're selling hundreds of millions of products.

Why give us something current that offers better specs and a better experience if Apple can use a much older part and earn a few more dollars or cents?

As we've seen when Apple secretly downgraded the SSDs in the entry-level M2 Macs, and Apple's Apple Watch SiP naming scheme, among other predatory practices, Apple prefers that the consumer knows as little about the exact performances of a given device and instead focuses on the name of the product and launch date to determine whether or not its worth buying.

Specifically regarding Apple Watch specs -Listing all the key specs of your Apple Watch, like RAM, CPU, GPU, battery in mAhs, etc., and making it easy for the consumer to grasp how most of the latest Apple Watch's hardware is inherited from last year's, or one they launched 3-4 years ago, certainly wouldn't help sales of the latest models.

The less you know, the better.

And on that note, I'm beyond stoked at the prospect of reading internal documents from Apple, showing exactly how they talk about and plan out all their highly profitable innovation stalling schemes, and what internal vocabulary is used to describe the tactics that keep us from leaving the Walled Garden.

The DOJ vs. Apple will be nothing less than epic!

Then buy a watch that offers you what you want if you think Apple is screwing you.

Wow i didn't realise that they are WiFi 4. That's bad. WiFi 5 should be absolute minimum but even that is kinda insulting for the latest models.

To be fair, maybe they have a point. Personally I don't really need my watch to connect to WiFi because I never need to do anything when I'm away from my iPhone. They could get away with low WiFi spec on the GPS only models but the Cellular models should have better WiFi.

Next gen models should have WiFi 6 on Series X GPS and WiFi 7 on Series X Cellular. Maybe 6E on Series X Cellular and 7 on Ultra 3.

Nobody cares how much RAM their watch has, details about its processor, and other tech specs. This is just another opportunity to take a feel-good slam at Apple.

That last line of the article: " There is not much else to say about the pages, other than "finally."
Got me. 😆

The same reason that:

- 2 external monitors is disabled by software on M1 and M2, but miraculously was possible for M3 after 6 months
- Stagemanager allegedly did not work on M-Socs
- ANC got reduced on Airpods
- Performance was limited on iPhone 6s's
- A one year old iPhone cannot have some basic improvement features the new 'just released' iPhone does have
Much as it sucks, Apple isn't the only company that does this.

I remember the early days of dSLRs. Canon's low-cost model had hardware which could handle a number of features which were on their higher-cost model, but they were disabled in firmware. Fairly early on, someone figured out how to adjust the firmware and magically enable a bunch of those features on the low-end camera.

Having all the details in one place on Apple's website is nice, glad it's there finally.

Same reason it's used in HomePods: There is marginally (if not zero) benefit to having a faster Wi-Fi chip than 4 right now, considering it's an Apple Watch/HomePod that isn't doing things like streaming 4K video or downloading massive files. Saves on battery life too, I would guess. I wonder how many people even have a newer router than 5 or 6 at this point yet too, let alone a faster Wi-Fi download speed than 4 permits.

What is the use case for the watch needing faster WiFi speeds? Isn’t WiFi 4 less power hungry?

hopefully future versions get 128gb storage and wifi5. I believe the current versions only have wifi4, which is kind of a bottleneck when trying to download offline playlists for Spotify on apple watch.

Also, it's been 10 years. Time to drop iphone exclusivity. Let anyone buy and use apple watch. Don't require people to buy a 500 dollar phone or or go on eBay and buy a crappy $200 iPhone just so they can activate an apple watch. It needs to lose it's reliance on iPhone anyway. It's really annoying to download apps that say "please open the iPhone app to continue". It's got a 64 bit dual core processor and enough ram and storage to run full fledged apps.

One example that's annoying is when downloading any of the hundreds of existing intermittent fasting apps. Literally all of them require you to "please open the iPhone app". First of all, on apple watch, they're all glorified timers and dont show the little body status paragraphs that the iPhone apps and widgets do. Secondly, it's time that those types of intermittent fasting apps *do* show widgets of information on the watch itself, instead of *just* being little glorified timers with a "stop fast" button. The whole point of the fasting apps with the cute little graphics and the body status information is that when you've fasted for 12 hours or so, you can tap the word "ketosis" and it'll open the paragraph explaining how your body is currently burning fat etc. Also you should be able to edit the start time etc, just like we can on the phone.
