Apps. that I don't want

On my new ibook -- I've just gone through the "lessons" on all the stuff the ibook has - LOTS!
Anyway, there are a few that I don't want and will never use and I want to get rid of them -- iMovie HD (I don't have any of the equipment and I'll never use this), iDVD (my ibook is only a combo not a super drive), GarageBand (I'll never use this), VoiceOver (no use for it).

Now, by going to the folders and dumping them into the trash, will this delete them altogether or do I need to do something else?

I disagree. If Cindy knows for sure that she won't use those apps then why not get rid of them and have more HD space? I have all of that on my iMac so I went through and got rid of GarageBand on my PB. Besides, she can always pop in the restore disks and get all the apps back.

True, but for me, hard drive (80 GB and 60 GB drives on my two main Macs) space isn't really an issue. I have never used iDVD or iMovie, but I figured I mind as well have them on there...

The best way to ensure that everything is gone is do a search for the name of the program, say Garageband, then drag the files to the trash. Also, one of the biggest hard drive hogs are the foreign languages. Definitely get rid of those.

i took the advice and removed idvd, and imovie... now i got 14.5gb of free space wooooooooo hooooooo! ( )....dam i knew i should of gotten a bigger HD...how can i remove the languages???

search versiontracker.com for an app called delocalizer and it can remove the unnecessary languages for you

I think for these two apps, in particular, these library folders are the vast majority of the space. the GB library folder is *huge*.

hey thanks for the heads up man...after going into apps, and putting the gb into trash i "thought" i got rid of everything, but then i went into library and got rid of idvd and gb, and wooooooow 2gbs more gigs of free space... woo hooo i went from 11gb of free space an hour ago, to 16gb of free spce...

There's LOTS more to get rid of!! Try typing in your finder window for example: GarageBand and see what it brings up. There's hidden stuff all over the place!! I was overwelmed.
How much of this stuff needs to get thrown out for more space or if it's not needed?
For example with the garage band I found lots of stuff going into HD-Library-Audio-AppleLoop-Apple-garage band

Even if you do a custom language install, it still seems to catch a lot of language files. Worth doing as it frees up a lot of room

This is something I wish Apple would improve on. I would like to see an uninstaller because often pieces of applications are scattered all over. Even worse is that the applications are generally supporting many languages. I just want my primary language installed. I went through and deleted extra language packages and freed up 800MB of space. Deleting unused applications, like iChat for me, would save some additional space.

i used delocalizer....and it removed 1.58 GB OF LANGUAGES!!!!!!!!!! i cant believe i didnt kno about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone else experienced this?

Not a problem. The Tiger installer lets you install just those languages and printer drivers you want, potentially saving several GBs on any Tiger install. If your machine came with Tiger pre-installed, do an Archive & Install, uncheck unnecessary languages and printers, make sure everything works and throw away the "previous systems" folder. You should have cleaned up a lot.

Also when installing/reinstalling iLife, just install those apps you want. If you're musically challenged (like me) Garageband makes little sense to install. Also if you have a combo optical drive iDVD won't do you much good. And so it goes...

I repaired them about 3 days ago because i had to install a 3rd party software update. Ill repair permissions again.

Update: Repaired permissions, restarted and no page outs so far.

I got rid of a ton of stuff. By nature, I'm not a pack-rat so I don't like keeping things around that I'm not going to use. I got rid of iMovie, iDVD, Garage Band, Voice Over and the languages. Should have cleared up alot of space.
Oh and ichat. I kept iChat on my emac for quite a while when I first bought it and after a year of never using it - I dumped it and never regretted it.

The author of Delocalizer says on his web site: "Delocalizer has not been tested on Mac OS 10.3. At this time I do not have plans to continue development on DeLocalizer."

Page outs is nothing overly bad, very simply it indicates that your physical memory is full and the HD is swapping to virtual memory. If you're regularly getting high page out numbers then you should seriously consider adding more RAM.
