can't you pick it up after a certain time at night if you miss the delivery....

Yeah you are right. I missed a Fed Ex delivery from Apple this week. They left a notice saying that I could pick it up at the Fed Ex office after 5:30 pm or they would re deliver it the next day. I went to the office to pick it up :D

Say you have an emergency that you need to stay home for your new iPad's arrival or pre sign but i don't recommend that because it can get stolen and it would be your problem.
3rd option is to wait for Saturday..

And in other news - even in this economy, Americans show their lack of work ethic and cause work shortages so they can sit home and play with their iPads on launch day

I know a lot of people who do that, it's their right and choice..
Nothing wrong with that at all.

I'm off work on Saturdays. But otherwise, I have paid time off I could take. I don't think that makes me a layabout or other scoundrel. Perhaps a little less righteous indignation from you directed at strangers with situations you can't even begin to know about?

I don't know how it works in the USA, but here in the Netherlands they will do it like this:

1) Put it through mailbox, if it doesn't fit ring the door
2) No response. Skip step 3 if you need to give a signature
3) They hand the package over to the neighbours and will leave you a note that they have it. If your neighbours aren't home, continue with step 4. If they are home, this was the last step
4) They won't put your package on the pavement (they just never do that over here, even if it's a really cheap thing). They will just leave.
5) They will come back the next day, unless it is Sunday (because you are not allowed to work on sunday by law).
6) Hand the package over on monday. If you, again, aren't home you have to come and get it yourself at the post office on tuesday or later (maximum of 14 days, or else your package will be destroyed).
7) Done.

More like it appears some people lack a sense of humor and/or subconsciously know that staying home just to get a device isn't exactly the "best" excuse. But whatever. I said it with tongue planted firmly in the cheek. Clearly it hit a nerve LOL

Unless they have changes the rules, UPS wouldn't deliver my iPHone 3G back in 08 with a "pre signed" slip on my door. I was luckily home for lunch when he showed up. He said they were not allowed to accept the pre signed forms on Apple's deliveries.

If they did, that would mean leaving an iPad on your doorstep until you got home. No way in hell I would trust that to happen.

As far as April 3rd goes my plans were to goto the Apple store, but if the Best Buy rumors unfold to be true, I'll be going to the much closer BB and picking up an iPad vs the Apple store and the one I reserved there.

Apple gives you the form to print and sign from their website upon the shipment of the package. I think they're okay with them. :) There are many good reasons not to do it, and you raised the best one. Theft.

Just cancel your pre-order and reserve a unit to pick up at Brea or South Coast (or if you're adventurous, run to the Best Buy next to The Block after work).

i agree. cancel the order and arrange to pick up an ipad after work. you have so many apple stores to choose from: south coast, fashion island, spectrum, brea, manhattan village, etc. you avoid the stress of wondering when the package will arrive, and you don't have to worry about delivery arrangements. after work, you go pick it up, and it's done. as long as you do it before 3 p.m. they'll hold it for you.

That was the form that in 2008 UPS would not accept. That is the only reason I mentioned it. Fedex may be ok with them.

*Edited my previous comment to reflect UPS was the one that didn't accept the form. :)
