You can pick it up in stores on the first, and i read something about how they ship them out and have ups hold them so they dont get delivered before the 2nd, but u would probably get it the 2nd

I don't think fedex will deliver on saturday unless it's a overnight weekend delivery? I think that's also why they have the option for reserve your ipad for instore on the 3rd.

You have the wrong dates. It is being released ok the 3rd of April as you will be able to "pre-order" or "reserve your iPad for instore pickup on the 3rd.

Saturday?

And people who have it shipped have to wait until Monday?

This is going to be a point of contention.

There are going to be conflicting reports on this, and when exactly people are going to get these.

When I have ordered and pre-ordered from Apple, they have delivered on release day via FedEx which does deliver on Saturday.

However, I would wait for confirmation from Apple. Usually closer to release data they will state whether it will be delivered on release day.

FWIW, Apple stores usually get items on release day via FedEx to prevent units from leaking out (direct from China, just as the iPad will come). All the iPhones were released this way. I would venture a guess that pre-orders will come this way too, but hopefully Apple will clarify (as they usually have in the past).

Looks like there's no mention of actual delivery dates, only that the wifi model can be reserved and "available for pickup" at an Apple Store on April 3rd. No mention or promise of the preordered mail order delivery date, and only that the 3G versio will be shipped "later in April".

Questions who pre-ordered the iPhone 3G S for Apple in store pickup, did you a). have to pay for the device at the time of the preorder or when picking it up and b). did anyone who did preorder it for in store pickup have an issue with availability? I would normally preorder the iPad for delivery but, since it's being released on a Saturday, makes me think I will not get the delivery on Saturday. One last thing, do you think there will be accessory shortages? Probably no data on that last one but just curious for opinions.

If I had to guess from the wording of the press release, if you pre-order to your home you won't get it until Monday 4/5 or after. If you pre-order for store pickup, they'll let you get it at a store on the release date 4/3. This way they can still gain some free publicity and extra store traffic (which will help to sell more accessories while you are at the store), but not deal with the full blown camping and long lines.

I think it's kind of a compromise solution between convenience for people who don't want to go to the store and wanting to generate more hype. Otherwise why choose a Saturday for release, they could just as easily have picked Friday or Monday and they could make sure pre-orders were received at home without any special Saturday delivery to worry about.

Possibly. Also, if they released it on Friday, they would most likely be waiting til 6:00PM to release it versus a possible 6-8:00AM release on Saturday. This way, not only does Apple get the line hype, possible larger accessory sale, but they also get the whole day to sell out on units and have a much larger base to be there to buy one.

Why would you get it a day later when everyone fedx time will not be the same some people will get it after it goes on sale. You will have many people that are going to go pick it up from the store and people buying it from the store they will get the press they need.

On the 3GS, I thought reserving for in-store pickup didn't guarantee a unit had your name on it. It basically helped Apple predict inventory and expedited the check out process. There were a lot of units available, so it wasn't an issue.

So, perhaps Apple expects to have plenty of units to ship stores reserve-plus stock quantities.

Or people could be angry and set the place on fire.

They could have just picked Saturday because they didn't want to the bad PR of going into the second week of April when everyone was waiting for last week in March. Saturday was probably the furthest they felt they could push it back without the later date becoming story.

Are people forgetting that kids have school monday-friday. But Saturday kids will be able to be inl line for them. Unlike the iphone anyone can get one you don't have to be 18 Or aproved for A&tt contract

From what I remember at the time of the 3GS launch, there was a separate line for those who had preordered. Those folks had a different process than the ones who were waiting in line who had not preordered. I doubt that any 3GS box had anyone's name on it, but probably each of those people stated that they'd preordered a 3GS and provided their name and the capacity of the iPhone they'd ordered. A box would have been retrieved from perhaps a separate place (?) and handed to them. This was very early in the day, of course I don't know if someone who arrived at the Apple store much later that day -- say, late afternoon or evening -- who had preordered with an arrangement for store pickup was able to leave the store with the box containing the prize......

I would think that some similar process would be put in place for the iPad launch, as again Apple will know how many units in each capacity will have been preordered for a given store and will ensure that those units are provided, as well as of course having (we hope) a plentiful supply of each capacity available for the folks who arrive at 5:00 AM and who are in line......

Yeah, but they'll have to have the funds available.....either in cash or on a credit/debit card. How many kids have credit cards? Frankly, I wouldn't want my child going to a mall with a pocketful of cash, especially if he or she were planning on buying more than the baseline, least expensive iPad.

That sounds familiar. Did they get let in early too, or was that just ATT?

This is a great way for Apple to manage inventory because it's can predict individual store demand. It's just disconcerting not having a box with your name on it.

So, what you're saying is look for anyone under 18 as they're carrying a lot of cash. Got it. :p

I kind of think that's not the primary reason for a Saturday.

How did they charge the credit card, did they charge it on that day or did charge it whenever you are there at the retail store picking up the item?

I can confirm, i arrived late in the apple store after work, and my reserved iPhone 3GS was set aside. It didn't have my name on it, but they do keep it till end of that day. They print out the name of all people who pre-ordered, and verify before putting you on a separate line.

think about it the iphone came out in the summer time. the ipad will come out during school time. a Saturday is a perferct day to get the whole family together and wait for a ipad.

No, the pre-order line was not let in early, it was just a separate line. I honestly don't remember and don't really know how the preorders were handled for the iPhone 3GS.......I just recall the separate line for those. NO idea of how Apple handled the financial arrangements, whether or not the credit card had already been charged or if it was charged at the point of sale in the store when the person was standing there in front of an Apple employee stating that he or she had a pre-ordered 3GS.....

Ah, thanks, JKK, for clarifying how this process actually worked at the time of the iPhone 3GS and would presumably work at the iPad launch......

Credit cards were not charged beforehand when doing an in-store pre-order. From what I remember, all the in-store pre-order did was let you choose your service plan, etc. to make the process go faster when you got to the store.

I think if we preorder then we will get iPad on Sat. Same day delivery.

God that is gonna be fun. Refresh on FedEx delivery. At least I won't be working, as it isn't a weekday, so I can wait for the FedEx guy.
