High grade metal and glass are expensive, so are high quality electronics. So, I expect to pay for that. Apple's builds are generally better than the rest though, so absent any immediately visible marks or damage I'm good.

There are far more expensive products out there in other industries that suffer from severe quality control issues and people accept them all the time. So it's interesting to me what hill people will choose to die on.
You are pushing your generalization way too far as I certainly would expect quality to match the price-tag always, from every company and every product. Other companies making expensive products which quality does not reflect the price they ask should not be an excuse for Apple to do the same.

A different way of thinking is just not consume friendly. These companies are already making record earnings, do we really want to give them a free pass to cut costs by offering us lower quality products while hitting even higher records in their banks? If you excuse, accept and not expect from these companies in the end only you as a user will have to lose.

I expect quality to match. I just have a higher tolerance level for insignificant defects that arise from mass produced products and less tolerance for those who find fault where there is none.

Tolerance must be indirectly proportional to pricing. They lower the price, I raise my tolerance. They increase the price, I lower my tolerance.

Nope. I've had every single iPhone since the original, and have never had a defect. If it happens, I will exchange it and go on with my life.
