Thanks for proving my point about Mac owners being arrogant ;)

You missed my point. The most vociferous and consistent complainers about MBPs on this board — a few names spring to mind — do not, in fact, own one.

I've been here long enough to have noticed that. ;)

Having a lap-burning laptop that would randomly just turn itself off was not me being nit-picky "domestic" user (whatever the crap that means). I'm a professional programmer. I need my computer for work. It turning itself off randomly isn't a small issue.

What that means is people who don't use their computers for work, who fetishise their computers beyond the point of reason, and bitch about the smallest of issues. There's no reason to be defensive... if you read my post carefully, you will see that I wasn't referring to the likes of you and your problems. Believe me, I did plenty of reading about Mac laptops before buying one. ;)

On the whole, I'm a pretty laid back guy. I'm also a pretty cheap bastard. When I pay good money for something - and with Apple, you pay good money - I want it to work.

I won't get all uppity about something if I'm not going to buy it. But if I spend my money on something, it has to work as advertised. This goes for anything I purchase, not just Apple products.

I think the question is: Are MacRumors users inherently anal?

But then, we know the answer to that. ;)

While I think the "opening ceremony" pictures are rather disturbing, saving the packaging is probably a good idea. If you need to return the item for repair or if you wish to resell it at a later date, the original packaging can come in handy.

haha, idk about that floptical... lots of people take pictures of their babies right after they're born. When you open that box you're getting a new member of your electronic device family. you know your apple will be with you along time.

i wonder if dell users do the same thing? i bet they're better at funerals ;)

I don't have the space to store all the packaging; had to throw the G4's box and polystyrene out. I live in a studio flat in central London which, in its entirety, is probably the size of your living room. ;)

I'll keep the MBP box as it's slim and I can store artwork inside it.

Been there, done that. One bed in West Kensington (off of Cromwell Road) with baby.

Now I have 3000sqft on an acreage with outbuildings. I have no excuse but you certainly do!

LOL! Once you've had the real thing, you don't have much time for taking pictures on "birthdays" of your electronics! :)

I agree. There are a lot of picky people on here. I wouldn't say mac users in general. But mac users who frequent macrumors forums, yes.

Just look at the complaints around here! There's more bitching here than me being eighth in a line full of check writers at my local Safeway store!

LOL...
They still have those things? (checks)
that was a funny line, I had to quote that :) I can relate.

Yes, I'm paying $3000 for a computer so it better be perfect! Same when I get any other product, like my Nintendo Wii, someone put something ontop of my Nintendo Wii once... Well it wasn't pretty for them.

It never fails... and not only do I get the old lady with a check, I get the old lady who:

1. Doesn't start filling out her check until she knows the total.
2. Doesn't know what store she is in so she looks around for signs.
3. Doesn't know what the date is.
4. Can't hear the cashier tell her the amount, date, or "Welcome to Safeway, did you find everything okay?"
5. Proceeds to enter all her check information into the register and reconcile her account before giving the cashier her check.
6. Can't rip the check from her checkbook.
7. Doesn't realize that she will need her drivers license to complete the purchase even though she has needed to produce it everytime she has ever checked out since 1953.
8. Can't find her drivers license.
9. Can't put her wallet back in her purse and get the hell out of my way while the cashier is starting to scan my crap and yet I am 6' from the ATM thing because I have the cart in front of me and she is still putting ^%#@# coins into her ^%#@# change purse.

Sigh.

God, I'm anal.

Somehow, when they were informing the world what anal actually meant, I must have been taking a nap. How that term was derived is even a greater mystery. I think it means detail compulsive? Not sure. But, I doubt if I am anal. I do take very good care of 'stuff'. Why not? I worked hard for it. However, I am not a Felix Unger. Maybe I am some other orifice.

I try to keep mine clean. Only thing I'm really worried about is major scratches or noticable oil marks on my keyboard or trackpad. I clean it when I get to it. I just make sure to wash my hands if I have been eating really greasy food. I'm not obesessed with it. I just don't let it get out of hand.

when i first got my imac i was anal about who used it and taking a shower before i touched it. now i do not care and it runs just as well.

mac users expect too much, pc users expect crap so they get crap

This thread is rediculous :D And I guess I'd say when it comes to computers yes. When it comes to iPods with easily scratched backs, no. I used to be so protective of my iPod, but now you can't really tell if another scratch has been put on it.

As a recent Mac convert, I'd have to say, yeah, the typical Apple user is anal. I base my view of this on visiting multiple forums and reading not just the help-related threads but the whole shebang. I also have coworkers that use Macs, but my coworkers appear to be the acception, because they don't complain about trivial issues that are flat-out ridiculous (they are actually utilitarians and realize that a Mac is a tool and tools get used and 'getting used' means wear and tear).

I don't agree with the thought that Apple hardware costs alot and that the end-user has a right to be anal. Most Apple hardware nowadays isn't THAT much more expensive than their competitors

How many carpenters to you know of that use their tools then complain that their Craftsman (a brand fit for gods, from what I've gathered) is misaligned by .005mm or that it has greasy fingerprints? I mean, really... :)

Actually, Craftsman is Sears.

Craftsman = eMachine
Snap-On = Alienware
MAC = Mac

And those last two user groups are very anal about their tools too! They actually keep them in $2K toolchests! (That's just a metal box ferchristsakes!)

you wouldnt have sex with a dirty condom would you?

..sorry.. thats just.. eww.

I definitely know what Craftsman is...ask any hardcore tool guy what's the brand of tool to have and 9/10th of the time, I'll bet its Craftsman.

Doesn't matter that it's a Sears product...they are very very good tools. That was that point I was trying to make. When I've a choice, I buy Craftsman. Snap-on is far from my mind. I've never ever broken anything that had Craftsman labeled on it and when I do, I can bring it back to Sears (possibly without a receipt) and they'll honor a lifetime warranty...I've several coworkers that can testify to that.

Somehow, I don't think you've been using many tools... The point was that tools are made to be used. A computer, no matter the brand, be it Mac or eMachine, is designed to be used, not put on a pedestal and kept from being marred.

Actually, you must run in different circles than I do. Professional mechanics and technicians are rarely seen with Craftsman tools. They are great for home projects but if you have to use it all day you would know that MAC wrenches do not wear on your palms and Snap-On screwdrivers are the best in the industry.
