Are apps like TextFree reliable?

I love everything about TextFree except for the "servers busy" issue that seems to be cropping up more and more lately. I also just paid the $5.99 to remove the ads for 1 year and will see if this improves battery life. As for iAds and downloading in the background I don't know, but many of the ads on TextFree are not iAds so they may be different. I ha noticed that sometimes my battery life is abysmal (Usage tracks Standby) but resetting the phone will fix the issue, at least for a time. The only apps that I use frequently are the phone app and TextFree, and often these are the only apps running when I notice the battery draining ultra fast.
