Got my iPhone Xs Max.

Been wondering if Apple OLED screens are now as good as Samsung's OLED screens.

Even though I am an Apple user always I remember the dark days of Apple LCD against Samsung OLED, it wasn't even close. Samsung's was year ahead.

Especially seeing my friend's Samsung phones it was shocking how theirs looked compared to my iPhone.

So how do we rate our current Xs Max OLED against Samsung's latest devices, and the possible devices due next year?

I know Samsung is a master are over saturating certain things to make the picture look more striking to the eye (and it does), but that results in less color accuracy. Apple never used to do that on their photos, but their new HDR system and camera system has been found to do that to give a more vibrant, albeit less accurate, image.

The Samsung looks way more vibrant in this video, is there a reason why the iPhone looks more dull? Brightness? Check at 6 minutes in.

So in my mind I always think Samsung have the better, more vibrant looking screens. But your opinion, is iPhone OLED now better than Samsung's OLEDs, if so then why?

Took a photo with my Xs Max and friend's Galaxy s9 plus.

You can see even in that picture the iPhone looks washed out compared to the more vibrant popping Samsung. The differences are far greater if you see it in person, several others have commented.

Clearly the Samsung looks better no? It's not a deal breaker for me but it would have been nice to have a picture like that. The accuracy argument won't stick, everyone uses filters on snapchat instagram facebook to make their pictures look better - no one is in the market for accurate images now (except for graphics designers).

For me the question is whether either oled is as good as Apple lcd.

Nah, Samsung's OLED is superior than Apple LCD in every way.

Except for when the purists will say accuracy is more important, but even now Apple are ditching accuracy for better looking images now. Because people don't want accurate images, people want shiny, vibrant and popping images which Samsung have had for years now.

Not to be redundant, but you do know that Samsung makes the amoled screens on the x, xs and max, right?

Yeah I know, but don't a lot of reviewers still say Samsung's screens are the best in the business?

I think it really depends on what you prefer. Samsung usually over saturates and Apple under-saturate. If you like bright, popping colors, then Samsung will look better.

Yeah that doesn’t look right.
Brightness in the iPhone is off.

This. Apple is known for accurate colors. Samsung is known for vibrant colors. Which you prefer will be what you think is "better". It's like asking which pizza crust is better: thin crust or deep dish. It's personal preference.

Apple is going for accuracy - the display will show you the picture the way your eye would see it live. Samsung seems to be artificially saturating colors to make them brighter than in real life. I think when doing A/B comparisons without actually being there live to see the subject of the photo, that makes Samsung look 'better' because it's brighter. But it doesn't make it actually "better" if you wanted something to look in the photo like it actually looked when you took the picture.

Personal opinion, but I think Apple's OLED's are just as good as Samsungs on my old X, after all Samsung makes both screens. I think the screen on my Xs Max is up there with Samsung as well, and I'm not sure if Samsung or LG made the screen this time around. Samsung's still have that color saturation they are famous for, but I'm sure that is something that is adjusted in software and not hardware, that's the difference in vibrancy you are seeing IMO. I think Apple's OLED screens strike a middle ground from the sort of dull LCD screens they had before, and the over saturated Samsung screens.

Ok guys I've just compared a bright vibrant hdr type image with my friends latest Samsung against my iPhone Xs Max.

The Samsung wins, colours are more true, image pops more, just looks better.

I don't really care if it's not accurate, it just looks better on his phone.

Hmm a bit disappointing, I paid a lot of money for this phone I wanted the screen to at least match the Samsung's.
[doublepost=1537797969][/doublepost]It's like in that video at the top, the iPhone next to the Samsung looks washed out.

It's not a game changer for me, I'm not gonna dump my iPhone because other than screen there are no advantages on Samsung in my opinion.

But yeah, damn, my friends have been boasting about the Samsung screens for a few years now, and in my head I thought ok just wait till I get OLED iPhone. And here I am - still behind.

The argument about accuracy vs pop, I think we have seen people want more pop, it's visually striking and just looks better.

I think you are confusing saturation for accuracy, You seem to prefer saturation, which is fine. When the X came out, it was the highest rated display ever tested, the S9 and Note 9 beat it as they are newer, have to see what they say when this XS is tested.

This is what was said about the X display, but you seem to not prefer accuracy so you will always prefer the non apple phone.

'The iPhone X matches or sets new Smartphone display performance records for:

Highest Absolute Color Accuracy for any Display (0.9JNCD) which is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect.

Highest Full Screen Brightness for OLED Smartphones (634 nits).

Highest Full Screen Contrast Rating in Ambient Light (141).'

Highest Contrast Ratio (Infinite).

Lowest Screen Reflectance (4.5 percent).

Smallest Brightness Variation with Viewing Angle (22 percent).

I appreciate that, certainly for accuracy I can understand Apple's screen is best.

But look at filters on snapchat and instagram for example, we don't want to see accuracy, we want to see what looks good?

We is you. The Note 9 and the S9 have amazing displays, the XS and XS Max have amazing displays, they are both Samsung displays, just calibrated differently. I have a Note 9 and the XS Max, I think they both look great.

It's not Samsung's design though, it's Apple's design and software. Samsung is a huge company. Their manufacturing division is not related to their smartphone division.

It's like if Ford was the only company that could make good windshields, and Chevy had them make their windshields for them. It's Chevy's design, but Ford made it. It's not the same windshield though.

There is no difference as far as having a great OLED screen. Now as far as how it looks? You do know Samsung over saturates their screen colors. Which produces bright popping colors. Apple doesn’t, which apple likes more real world colors. It’s just a company now setting the screen to their liking. Neither is better. It’s just a customer preference.

Samsung doesn't sell their best to competitors especially at Apple's low ball pricing demands. It'll always be a generation or more behind but still better than pee yellow LG.

That’s actually a completely false statement. Just like the fud about the iPhone X having the same screen as the s6.

In reality Apples oled displays are Samsung displays best, expensive and most complicated oled display that they manufacture compared to the ones Samsung mobile uses on their galaxy line.

It’s much more complicated to manufacture to apple specifications that yield rates for apples oled display were at 60% compared to Samsung mobile oled that were at 80%.

So once again you are quite wrong.

I just swapped the 8+ for the Max. The Sammy's screen is better. Higher resolution helps. No color/tint shift looking off axis. Every time I switch from Android to iPhone I notice the change the screen quality but that wears off.

All the Youtube videos and comparisons I have seen look quitte the opposite of what you are claiming.

Side by side the note 9 display looks dull compared to the iphone, posted an image at the top.

They’ll go back and forth. The Xs Max screen is better than the Note 9. Then the Note 10 next year will be better. Then the iPhone 11 will be better. It’s not that big of a difference either way so not sure it matters.

That’s one way way to look at it. But in 2017 the iPhone X had the best display and in 2018 the iPhone Xs has the best and largest display and in 2019....

You get the picture.
