Samsung uses higher quality screens with less color shift and better resolution; however, Apple calibrates colors better.

I just swapped the 8+ for the Max. The Sammy's screen is better. Higher resolution helps. No color/tint shift looking off axis. Every time I switch from Android to iPhone I notice the change the screen quality but that wears off.

Color shift annoys me.
Because Apple is using Samsung screens (LG too shortly, it makes me believe they are accepting lower tolerances and quality.

I honestly can’t make a fair evaluation, because I don’t use Samsung displays. But somewhat unrelated, I always have thought Apples displays have been solid, especially the OLED panels, I think they look excellent in terms of calibration and I really generally don’t have any complaints, but nor am I somebody that will compare Samsung and Apple side-by-side.

Samsung has curved edges on its display. Iphone’s display is nice and flat. Flat is where it’s at.

I love my S9+ for many reasons but do hope someday they will go flat again.

After this, in my opinion yes the iPhone XS Max display is better than the Note 9’s. It mainly comes down to having 660-697 nits of glorious brightness available at ALL times to the end user. Not to mention automatic color management of the two most used color gamut’s, True Tone, Night Shift, etc.

Because people don't want accurate images, people want shiny, vibrant and popping images which Samsung have had for years now.

This is completely right. "Color accuracy" my arse. People like nice looking colors. The only ones defending apple's washed out colors are either Apple die-hard fans or photographers.

I think it’s comparable, I wouldn’t put the Apple display on top of the Samsung due to the resolution, but it’s very close.

Wait but the op claims the iPhone X’s max has a dull screen he claims to have compared it to his note 9 and offered to post pics...come to think
If it where did the op go?

No, used a bunch of different XS Max displays in an Apple store and it’s definitely twice as bright indoors.

Well I compared the s9 plus against my max today with a hdr picture, certainly the Samsung pops more and the max looks more washed out when next to the s9 plus.

Yes I understand iPhone is more accurate, but as I said, in a world of filters who actually cares about colour accuracy? People want to see the most dramatic best looking images and for me Samsung's phones are better in that department - I've seen it with my own eyes.

I'll take a picture to show.

That makes more sense. Op claimed he had his iPhone X’s max and a Samsung and were comparing the two.

Guess not.

Y’all, I’ve done this a million times. The X is almost twice as bright indoors.

Note 9 users please make sure your display settings are either set to cinema or basic and you’ll see the exact same colors as the X, XS, and XS Max. Adaptive mode is so fake and saturated it hurts my eyes. Thanks

But if a Note 9 is set in the cinema or basic display modes and goes up against any OLED iPhone indoors, the iPhones will destroy in brightness. In high ambient light, the Note 9 will edge out all of the OLED iPhones. End of story.

Lots and lots and lots of people care about color accuracy.

The best looking images to tons of people are ones that accurately represent what they are images of. If that’s not what you are looking for in a display that’s fine but don’t pretend that because you like oversaturated fake looking displays that it makes them somehow better and that apple need to catch up.

Apple has consistently pumped out amazing displays including their LCD displays before last year and now their OLED displays are the best the last two years.

Okay I don’t have a Note 9. I have a S9+ and a Max and did some peeping at the displays. iPhone and Samsung set to Basic mode seem to depict colors on the photos in my Google album very similarly. I did turn off all the filters of course like night shift and blue light filters and true tone.

Having a curved edge does seem to impact the quality of the display. The curved edges of the Samsung bend light and keep the display from getting as pure black as it should if I myself am sitting in a dark room looking at something that has black background, like the Speed Test panel. On the Samsung the black looks a bit washed out due to the edges being curved. A tiny bit. Only a nitpicker would be bothered. :p

Where the Samsung kicks some tail is that my eyes can make out a bit more details and appreciate the greater sharpness of photos on the Samsung's highest resolution setting. 2960×1440

But nobody who owns a Max is going to be sad their display has a lower ppi. You'll be able to see more than enough detail on your photos. The difference appears slight. It's not going to jump out at anybody.

Sorry for the weird formatting of this post. I am currently on my Samsung and after a day of typing on the Max I hit all sorts of wrong buttons everywhere.

The lcd displays were awful. Anyone switching between android and iPhones regularly as I did,it was the first thing you noticed. The low resolution washed out displays were serviceable and little more.

I have a S9+, Max and 8 Plus. All three look great. The 8 Plus actually compares very favorably. I never owned the non Plus models but saw them in the store. They look okay. Low resolution but not washed out.

That's great and all that you think that but people who actually test displays have consistently ranked apple LCDs as the best LCDs in a smart phone year after year.

Obviously if you prefer oled and apple is still using LCD tech then you are not exactly going to be doing a fair comparison based on your preference but that doesn't change the fact that Apple has always had high quality displays.

I have had iPhones since the first one so I will never switch. But I do prefer my friends Samsung screens as they are look more stunning with the colours.

Six to one, half a dozen to the other, the note 9 has higher ppi (unlike RGB LCD this is still very relevant up to 500ppi+ on pentile oleds) while the iPhone fights back with more brightness and more delicately calibrated colours.

So I took a picture of a vibrant scene from my Xs Max compared to my friend's s9 plus.

The picture doesn't do it justice as the differences are far more pronounced in real life but you can see the differences I was talking about.

The Xs Max looks good by itself but next to the Samsung it looks washed out, others around who saw me taking the picture live said the same thing.

The Samsung one looks like it's coming to life, whereas my max looks a bit more like a picture. Same source picture on both, and trust in me, in real life with the human eye the differences are far greater.

Everyone uses a filter on snapchat, instagram facebook etc to enhance their picture. Filters make it look better, that is why people use them. And the Samsung does look better to my eye.

I love how Samsung saturate their screens.

I like how Apple aims for accuracy, but I’d love the choice on my XSM to choose either saturation or accurate.
