Are iPhone users the target market for the iPad?

In the iPad keynote, Steve Jobs stated that millions of people already know how to use the iPad because they own an iPhone.

iPhone owners: Are you going to purchase an iPad? Why or why not? If you would purchase one, Wifi only or 3G?

Me: Being an iPhone owner, I feel the ebook reader feature is the only truly new experience the iPad could offer me. I think the iPad is a pretty sweet device, I just feel it would duplicate many tasks I can already accomplish on a device that fits in my pocket.
 
I'm with you eezing. The only reason I would purchase an iPad is for the ebook reader, which looks awesome. And for bragging rights of course lol. Other than that, I would have no use for it.
 
Practically speaking, no. But it's definitely a cool device that people with or without iPhones are gonna be impressed with when they get their hands on it at the Apple store. People buy it because it's cool, not because they need it. Cause when you're at the Apple Store, emotions take over, there's a big crowd, big lines at check out, everyone's playing with one, everyone's buying one, the higher capacity models are sold out, and you're gonna fight to grab the last iPad available.

My initial thought is no, I will not buy one. After a while once more apps and more "new" ideas of what you can do with them comes out, I might purchase the wifi only one.

The big positive (maybe the only one) of this device over my iPhone is watching videos while traveling will be much nicer than it is on the iPhone screen.
 
I will not buy the iPad. I do not see the possible use I could have for such a device.

I understand that others iPhone users could see something in this device, but I personally do not have any one positive point that would make me lean towards buying one.

In terms of ebooks, I am one of the old school people, and refuse to buy an e-reader. I like the smell of books too much for that.

My iPhone does what I would want to do on the go, hence no need for the iPad.
 
As an iPhone user for the past 2 years, no I will not be purchasing an iPad. It's a giant iPod Touch and to be honest, if I want to read something, i'll take the book with me where I go. I believe it's targeted at people who don't have an iPod or iPhone because if you have one (along with a laptop) there is no need for one. If i need to look something up on the go, i'll use my iPhone. If i need bigger artillery, i'll use my macbook. But there really isn't too big of a midway point to say "I would rather use my iPad for this instead of my macbook" except maybe ebook reading, but then again I dont need that.
 
I am hoping to attend a convention and winning one at the vendor expo. :D

In past conventions, I have won an xbox 360 w/accessories and a 16GB iPod Touch. :cool:

I am good with my iPhone and laptop for mobile needs, so I can't justify the purchase of an iPad. I plan on upgrading my iPhone this year though.
 
I concur. My setup includes a 13" MBP connected to a 24" Apple monitor and an iPhone 3G for maximum portability. I can complete nearly all of my daily tasks on-the-go with my iphone (that fits right in my pocket)...as for the rest (writing papers, editing photos, multimedia etc.) I have my macbook pro as my only (all-in-one) machine that acts both as a desktop and laptop. I can't see me purchasing an iPad anytime soon. I agree, the ebook aspect of the device is brilliant, but I simply don't read enough to justify the price. If I would purchase one, it would be strictly the wifi version since I already have a data plan with my iPhone.

On the other hand, if my only machine was an iMac and I had an iPhone, I may pick up the iPad as a cheap notebook solution but I would probably still opt for the wifi only version. I like maintaining only one machine and it wouldn't bother me to sync the iPad with my desktop and throw in my bag if I want to venture outside the apartment to work on a project for school or simply load it with music, movies, books for a travel companion for a weekend. That's where the iPad really shines if you ask me.

A year or two down the road if they make some minor revisions to the device and add USB connectivity and possibly a disc drive then I might reconsider.

I'm with you OllyW. I've got both an iPhone and MBP, so there is not need for such a device. However, If I had only one of these, I would consider it. If I consider how I use my iPhone beyond the phone calls; reading email, surfing, watching movies, etc. this device would do those things much, much better. All without the heft of lugging my laptop around. Hmmm, maybe I could use one... I think its not about what it does, but how you experience what it does that is so appealing...
 
Even though it would be "cool" to own an iPad, my iPhone and MBP are more than enough for me. I read a lot of books, but I'm not a fan of eReaders at all. The other features of the iPad I already enjoy on my iPhone, so I don't see the need for me to spend $500 on it. The most I'll probably do is play around with the iPad at my local Apple store when it's released.
 
Buying an iPad Wifi.. not sure about the memory yet. I'll be sharing it with my family members who are currently Windows users... my mother particularly is interested in one. She will be getting my iPhone 3G this summer as well assuming a new iPhone comes out.

I think if you have a few people in your family to share it with it is a good idea. I can't see it as my primary computer since I have a MacBook circa 2007.
 
No, I won't be buying one. I am actually getting fed up with Apple, they could've done better. If the next iPhone doesn't catch up with other smart phones, I will probably switch.
 
Argument by OP: As iPhone users, we don't really need an iPad.
Conclusion by many posters: Yes, therefore the iPad was a mistake.

My new, similar argument: As iPhone users, we also don't need an iPod Touch.
Logical Conclusion: You also think Apple shouldn't have made the iPod Touch.

If others want one, that's great. Myself, I don't really see that I would need/enjoy one.

My iPod Touch was my gateway drug to my iPhone. If there was no iPod Touch, I would have never purchased an iPhone.

Will my iPhone be my gateway drug to my iPad? I doubt it, but only time will tell.
 
To be honest, I think it's geared to consumers whom don't own an iPhone.
Why would iPhone owners purchase this product for a minimum of $500 - and pay an additional $15-30/ month for another data plan? The iPad is identical to the iPhone- except of course for the larger screen for movies,games,web and for 'iBooks'. Of course some people would purchase this who already own iPhones but for the most part, I feel the iPad is geared for non- iPhone customers.

iPad a mistake? I think not. I was just commenting that maybe iPhone users (contrary to what Steve Jobs said) are NOT the target market for the iPad.
 
Have a 1st Gen Touch, iPhone 3GS and assorted personal computers (desktop, laptop and netbook) around the house. I would consider a wifi iPad instead of buying a new Macbook or Windows laptop for casual use around the house. As a capable minimalist device, it could easily meet the needs of a kitchen or family room internet device and not have to be semi-permanently parked on a desk or counter.

Between my iPhone and my MBP, I'm trying to see what I would need an iPad for. As it stands now, I am probably not going to get one.
 
As seen in my signature, I already have an iPhone 3Gs, and a MacBook. I will also be picking up a 32GB WiFi iPad when it becomes available. I want one because I think it will be great for my train rides to and from work (1 hour and 20 minutes each way) and also just for general casual internet browsing, for when I do not feel like going upstairs to my iMac, or sitting at a table with my MacBook.

I am not getting the 3G version because I plan on tethering it with my iPhone (MyWi).

I will definitely buy an AppleSeat. It would be 100 times better than any other toilet.

But seriously, this iPad seems to target techies mostly. This is truly a half-assed Apple product; the iBookstore portion is the only new thing and it isn't that good.

They should have included some more stellar 1st party apps (ex. iChat, or have your Mac extend features to it). I know they want 3rd party developers to join but seriously, make some killer 1st party apps/features on this puppy.
 
I don't plan on buying this iteration of the iPad because I have an iPhone and a Kindle DX. If my Kindle were to break or something, I might consider it, but I'll probably wait until Apple decides to make an actual computer with a touchscreen interface.
 
I own an iPhone and a Macbook and still for me an iPad might be very useful.

I think the main thing that makes it more useful than an iPhone is iWork. Most of my school work is done in iWork and a lot of times I don't feel like having my Macbook with me because I already have a lot to carry most days (uniform, shoes and makeup for work, a folder with school stuff...) so the iPad could be useful for me to get some work done on the go without the need to carry my MB which is considerably bigger and heavier. Plus I don't really have school books, I have mostly PDFs so I could keep them on the iPad instead of having to print them and having all these folders to store them.

I'm also curious about iBooks. I read a lot (I almost always have at least one book with me) but I was never interested in eBook readers because I thought they were too expensive for very limited functionality. So even though that's not my main interest about the iPad I'm curious if I could realistically use it to read books.
