Are Jailbreakers Thieves?

I've seen lots of people make their arrangements against jailbreaking calling us pirates and whatnot, but I'd really like to see just how founded these are.

Just be honest here and answer the question.

DON'T POST ANY LINKS OR DISCUSS ACTUAL PIRATED APPS.

Speculation here about "Oh people don't really pirate them that much" or "EVERYONE Pirates and lies" is useless. Let the poll show the data. Discuss what it shows if you want.

The questions I'm asking are to cover the different views on pirated apps as well.

EDIT: Also... If you're not jailbroken DON'T VOTE
 
Mmk. Poll posted, and voted "No, never."
Do I believe JBers are theives? No.
Do I believe that people who download paid apps for free are theives? Yes.
Do I care if you pirate someone else's app? No, not really.
Do I care if you pirate MY apps? You betchur ass I do.

If an app is importnat to you, buy it.

I see it this way: If you download an app for free, because you wanted to try before you buy, and you find that its great, and you will continue to use it, you should download it legit. and pay the associated fee. We put a lot of time and effort into apps, and decide to charge for our time, and ONGOING efforts to make the app the best it can be.
 
I admit that I do download cracked apps, but only to try them. Apps that I decide to keep, I buy, because I believe in paying for what I use, and also because I want to ensure that I can use the apps I need or like on any i-device I get, whether or not they are jailbroken.

But I was so glad I could try before I buy when I found that both QuickOffice and Documents To Go didn't handle Japanese input properly. That makes them both useless to me (very unfortunate -- I'm still looking for a viable document editing solution), and I'm happy I didn't have to fork over $5-$10 each to find that out.

Jailbreaking does not equal pirating. Mine is jailbroken so I can do things that apple should already be doing.... (Backgrounding, Categories, themes)... by the way i hope that didnt offend anyone;)

All Jailbreakers are not Pirates. All whales are not dolphins...

BUT...

All Pirates are jailbreakers and all Dolphins are whales.

I'm not saying that jailbreaking = pirating but it is true that pirating = jailbreaking. To pirate apps you HAVE TO JAILBREAK. This is what makes it relevant. Pirates are merely a subset of jailbreakers and I want to see how big that subset is. Mostly to have some basis of argument against those who comment about the legitimacy of jailbreaking.

I'll let everyone else decide which post was more dumb... Yours or mine.

With what's starting to happen with Apple combating jailbreakers (changes to iBoot hiring of new security professionals) I am seeing a lot of stats thrown around on both sides of the fence on these forums.

We get jailbreakers saying that "it's just the few of us" and we get the non jailbreakers saying "it's over 80% of you".

This is going to get heated, for sure. I am more looking just for the poll. A way to put this kind of argument to rest and let the numbers speak for themselves. I, personally, do not pirate apps and would like to believe that it is only a minority of jailbreakers, but when I make these arguments i'd like to know if they are founded.

To any Mod... If there is a way to lock the reply's and leave the Poll, that'd be awesome! This is probably going to get rough but I would like to see what numbers come up at the end.
 
Why are you bothered about this?

Far more pirating goes on with PC/Mac software, MP3 and DVD. None of which requires a jailbreak.

Are you really that bothered if someone Jailbreaks and then downloads a 59p app without paying for it?

I can't imagine anyone jail breaking for the purpose of saving 59p.

I haven't downloaded anything to my phone that I was not entitled to. (That's not some veiled way to say I believe we're entitled to everything free.)

Do you think Windows and OSX should be closed too ?

EDIT: You spelled Thieves wrong in the title by the way. :)

Not true either, as there are plenty of pirating going on without jailbreaking, as pointed out by a poster above. It's true that *on the iphone*, you have to jailbreak to pirate. But as for those people who approach jailbreaking with the "pirate" mentality, whose main or only interest in jailbreaking is pirating software, I for one hesitate to call them "jailbreakers." Jailbreakers, IMO, are those interested in taking control of their iPhones, whether it is to mod them with themes or obtain non-Apple approved functionality like multitasking, LockInfo, custom keyboards, etc.

You see that I do limit this to iPhone applications.... If there is a way to do this without jailbreaking then it's totally news to me.

Apparently there is far less reading going on here than I would have thought.

I am not bothered about anything. I am not attributing jailbreakers with pirates. *sigh* Seriously people. I am a happy jailbreaker for the sole purpose of running apps that Apple refuses to approve. Things like LockInfo make me happy to own my iPhone.

Also, I'd like to add that the reason this is interesting to look at over piracy on computers is because it requires modification to open the system. A step that the casual user who may download a pirated app via bittorent on a computer will probably not take.

So far I'm happy to find that only about 1/3rd of the people who have voted so far pirate software. This is a stark contrast to the 80% someone quoted earlier today.
 
Jailbreakeing is not pirateing, unless you download pirated apps, some just want more out of the phone
 
Put it this way....
If Apple figured out a way to stop "pirated apps" would you still jailbreak your device?

HELLS YEAH!
 
no they are not thieves... the people who even "pirate" apps, are NOT thieves... they just copy information that they didnt happen to pay for, theyre not physically taking something from someone where the victim is without it. bleh, dont wanna get into the philosophy about it, so ima stop here...

if they just jailbreak it for customization, they are not thieves... but if they use installo.us and other pirate apps they download, then to some of you its questionable (me, personally i believe, nope)

breaking the rules to certain regulations doesn't necissarily mean your a thief.

Taking someone's work product without payment is certainly sealing.

1+ here sorry I have bought too much junk! if I like I buy it! ;) also I couldn't a chance to throw this in! also I don't do this with everything but if I am looking for a utility and they have ten apps that do the same thing try 10 delete 9 buy 1! 10th one also gets a review I tried the other 9 this App is the best I have tried.

voted yes. But I would pay for them if i could. What i mean is that my family (I'm still in high school living with my parents) is struggling because of the economy and we just haven't made good decisions with money in the past. if i was in better financial situation, i would still pirate, but i would buy the app if i liked it. So technically yes, i'm a pirate, but only because I don't have much money to begin with.

edit: After reading some other posts on this thread, i thought i should mention that i don't jailbreak souly to pirate. Themes, Tethering, downloading 20 mb over 3G, and video recording (which i shouldn't need to jailbreak to do APPLE!!!) are a few other reasons i jailbreak.
 
I've never downloaded a cracked app. I'm not huge on apps to begin with, TBH; the only reason I jailbroke was to customize my phone with themes and SMS tones. That's it.
