I can't really make sense of what you said.
An 8K monitor has the same number of pixels as 4x 4K monitors. Apple's preferred Retina scaling is 2x (aka Integer scaling). Hence, 4K Retina requires double the vertical and double the horizontal pixels in order to be Retina 2x. Think of it as a 2x2 grid of 4K monitors, or in other words, an 8K monitor. It's basic macOS scaling.

I would say the Macs are ready for 8k video. Heck, even 16k or more because these things can run multiple 4k videos at a time.

How does ProRes hardware codec help with 8K AV1 while still limited to 4K output?

I can confirm 4320p60 playback via Chrome on my Mac Studio + Pro Display XDR. A few dropped frames, but nothing too bad.

I tried it also on my M1 MacBook Air, and the buffering made it unwatchable. This was with a wired LAN connection (2.5Gb connection and 5Gb fiber internet), so I think the decoding of the base M1 simply could not keep up with YouTube. And the M1 Air got really hot trying to play it!
"Few", like a fifth of every frame is dropped unless you streamed the 1GB version instead of the 2GB version. The bitrate is simply too high without hardware decoding for AV1 10-bit HDR.

If I re-encode it to HVEC 10-bit it will play back smoothly with no dropped frames in 8K as expected because M1 Max has hardware decode for that.

Pffft, I don't even watch 4k on YT, nevermind 8k. I'm not sure how many people out in the interwebs has 8k monitors, but I'm betting that the quality difference between 4k and 8k in 2022 is not noticeable. Maybe when manufacturers start shipping 8k display panels/monitors could it matter even then. Sitting 2 feet away from a monitor, I'm not sure you'll really get to enjoy 8k that much - but then since I don't even have a 4k monitor, I probably don't know what I'm talking about

I know it doesn't matter for 99.9% of users that still think 1440p is the bee's knees. However, those that have an 8K display can clearly see the difference.

I'm hoping Apple will officially support HDMI2.1, DP2.0 and 8K soon, personally. The Sharp M8-B32C1 looks really great (although priced to the moon at nearly $20K, yikes). The Dell UP3218K will have to live a few years more.

How do I know if I'm watching the 1GB vs. the 2GB version?

So we've concluded the M2 doesn't have hardware decoding for AV1 10-bit HDR?

Only Nvidia RTX3000 and Intel 12th gen integrated graphics/GPUs or newer have 8K 60Hz AV1 hardware decode.

You can use yt-dlp to see/download available YouTube video resolution, encoding, SDR/HDR, frame rate, bitrate. Here's for Bulgaria 8K video.

Or sit right in front of the monitor, like normal people do?

It's great for multitasking having two applications open side by side.
4K is great for side by side applications.

8K? I’m all for being able to fit more of my servers on a single screen and being able to use it, but it’s going to be a looooong time before I can justify a monitor that costs thousands of dollars.

They only cost that much because there is such a dearth of supply of them. The Dell UP3218K is the only "consumer oriented" 8K monitor on the market, and it's 5+ years old at this point. It's a bit of a chicken or the egg problem.

Personally for myself I would love a 27" or 32" 8K monitor to run as 4K Retina. I'm a software engineer staring at code on my screen all day. I would absolutely love the clarity of text that would give me. Currently with my Dell U2720Q's w/ their 163ppi and matte screen, reading text is pretty meh at their native 4K with no scaling. I value real-estate so I can have more code up on my screen at any given time, hence why no scaling, but man I really do love how good it looks when I temporarily enable Retina 2x on occasion.

That’s what I mean though. I spent $500 on a “decent” 32inch 4K display. The cheapest I can get is around $250.

It’s going to be years before anything 8K is even remotely feasible for regular people/workers to have access to these at non-eye watering prices….which is why I don’t understand the call from the gaming community for support.

That said, the gaming community is a unique breed of low-level techies that like their specs but rarely have an understanding of what they actually mean from an architecture standpoint.
