I apologize for my ignorance (new iPhone owner), but what does everyone mean by "push notification"? Basically, is there an overall push function for all apps, or is it by a "per-app" basis, i.e. some apps have it some apps don't.

Thanks!

Apple provides push for all apps. But it's really on a per app basis since it's up to each developer to take advantage of it.

You can get facebook IM's pushed just choose an app you like that does it. I use Beejive.

I love em.

The only ones I have set up are for etrade to send notices when prices are up or down a certain percentage.

A "real" background app API would still be nice, however. Push notifications are obviously only effective if the app is backed by a web-connected server. I think it would be cool if there was a background API that could respond to bluetooth events, network events, etc.

I barely use them. Pretty much just tells me that the Yankees are starting.

The one app i like tho is iCam. it sends the isight of your machine to your iphone (audio and all). Since push came out they have added a motion detector which sends me a message through push. Thats kinda hot.

The only advantage of background processes above push notifications that I can see is for apps like Pandora, Sirius and the like so they can play music in the background. What other benefits would there be for apps to run in the background?

Now I agree Apple's implementation of push notifications needs some work especially in regards to multiple notifications but that is something they can improve on and I don't see that as a reason that background processes would be better.

Its good if you are constantly with your phone

leave the phone for a while and the latest notifications overright the previous ones.

If it kept previous notifications it would be better (or some way of letting you know how many you have)

eg

I have a todo reminder for 10am, I dont see this straightaway, a sport result comes in just after 10am, I dont know the todo item is due unless i check the app as the sport score has wiped it out

If they wouldn't have taken the time to "develop" push then we would have neither, is that what your trying to say ?

No. Read harder? Not sure why you put quotes around "develop" either...

I agree as well. Now that we have so many applications using push notifications, Apple needs to come with an app, or some other mechanism, to be able to see and manage multiple notifications. This instead of relying on app badge changes.

Push was well worth the effort on Apple's part, if only for a small handful of apps. Ever used the Ebay app? Push notifications make that app incredibly useful. All the IM apps are a lot better because of push notifications, too.

I fullly expect we'll see a reworked Notification system in 4.0.

Something more akin to the Palm Pre's notifications. They stay out of the way and don't bother the user. My guess is we'll see that change next summer. Now that plenty of apps are using notifications people are starting to see how cumbersome the current modal dialog is. It interrupts your work and people are frustrated by that. We'll see something much more fluid in the next release.

In all seriousness, who uses those today? I have barely used AIM in four years. Most everybody I know will either send you a message via e-mail, via Facebook or send you an SMS.

I use it all the time here. I have FB but don't like using it. It's cluttered and really does nothing for me. There are some people I don't want having my phone number so SMS is out. Sometimes the same thing for email. Either way, real time chat - IM - is the best thing out there.

I wish I could go all instant messaging. Sadly most normal cell phones don't have access to aim or yahoo or whatever. At least not easily. I'm dying for Google Voice App with Push notifications for voice mail and SMS.

Haha, I can't say I agree with the wording, but this is exactlywhy I need an IM app.

Personally if you're in the market for one. I'd wait and see what Trillian Astra has to offer. It's been in review for like 7 weeks now but from what I've seen it could be the best IM app available when it does finally hit the store.

The preview looked like it was still missing features Beejive has had for a while (no landscape mode, etc).

Beejive's landscape sucks. Half the time it messes up on me and i can't actually do anything in landscape mode.

Beejive might have more features, but it's certainly got a crappy number of bugs. Plus their support sucks it hardcore.

Push notifications is very useful for news, sports, IM.

However, the problem with push notifications is it is very limited because of the way it is implemented on the iPhone. Unlike Android/Pre where you can pull up a tray of your recent notifications, the iPhone insists you find the badges on all the different pages of apps to see what popups you have missed. And the popups themselves are like the annoying message boxes in Windows. They can be very annoying when running another app.

I figure Apple has to be working on this because they are getting killed by Android/Pre in this area.
Apple should implement a lockscreen function that shows all missed im’s, texts, scores, emails, etc and allow you to tap it to open that particular app. AKA Intelliscreen (Or whatever the name of that jailbreak app is)
