I would be surprised if they ever came back. And how are they useful? Multitouch scrolling is superior in every way.

Multi-touch is absolutely useless on an iMac with a mouse.

Ever heard of MagicTrackpad? At any rate, I am sure that your mouse has a scroll wheel. If its a decent mouse, it will even have a horizontal scroll wheel.

That's definitely never coming back, its from a time when most mice didn't even have scroll wheels. Come to think of it, its quite shocking that OS X launched with them in the first place

I don't think that 10.0-10.2 supported multi-button mice or scroll wheels...at least I've never had any luck getting it to work.

I have a Powermac G4 with every OSX version it supports installed(10.1 through 10.5) and a USB Mighty Mouse connected to it. In everything below 10.3, the Mighty Mouse just acts like a classic Apple 1-button mouse.

So, using a standard mouse with a vertical-only scroll wheel is out of question for any Mac model, since you cannot scroll horizontally (at least without using the keyboard's ultra-slow cursor keys) ?

Not very innovative to be honest...

All Macs are delivered with input devices that allow convenient vertical and horizontal scrolling. If you choose to use a subpar third-party mouse, I don't really see how this is Apple's problem. Furthermore, I don't see why I should be punished with cumbersome and sub-optimal UI just so that you can use a cheap mouse.

Then you go into system preferences, pick "General" and turn "Show Scroll Bars" to "Always."

No clue why you'd need the arrows, that method allows me to scroll up and down and left and right with even the simplest mouse.

Even Apple itself wouldn't go that far to exaggerate and call all mice beyond apple magic mouse "subpar". There are many people who find apple mouse a bad joke compared to logitech, microsoft, or razer mice for example.

Sadly, Apple is terrible on making mice. Trackpad is a totally different story, though. But they are not always a desirable option on a desktop system.

Yep, that's a good solution, thanks. I tend to forget that this option is there, and leave it default to auto (which won't work for many 3rd party devices). But that's definitely a good solution.

Please do not quote me for something I never said. I fully agree that Apple's mouses are absolutely awful (always have been!)l. But every decent mouse AFAIK comes with both vertical and horizontal scrolling features.

This. Plus the old SL arrows were just hideous.

One of the things I love about apple is below the top bar there is nothing obtrusive. Windows browsers are so annoying with their fixes bars and info at the bottom.

Sorry, I guess I've misunderstood your post, thinking you were referring to any mouse out there.

Anyway, I did have excellent mice all these years with my macs (and most of them on the expensive price range) that never had horizontal scroll wheel (always had a vertical one of course). Always finding very annoying the scrollwheels that moved horizontally.

But this is a non-issue anyway. I was wrong from the beginning, since apple offers the option to turn on/off the scrollbars.

I use a cheap crap mouse when i'm at my desk but i have no problem scrolling side to side because my macbook is right next to my mousepad.

Great attitude

Believe it or not, @leman, others might have valid reasons for wanting the arrows and, if the Geniuses at Apple (their word, not mine) are what they claim to be, I somehow suspect they could have come up with an option that one could set in Preferences to enable or disable the arrows.

In my case, I have an 88 year old mother who uses her computer actively, but may not adopt to change as quickly as you or I. So I would advise replacing your attitude with one that is more forgiving to your fellow users.

I am certainly not doubting that there are valid reasons to want scrollbar arrows. But you also need to realise that the decision has been made and the chance of scrollbar arrows to return is very slim. You also need to realise that one can't put a preference option for any kind of feature some users might want. There is one (quite controversial) software design principle which is Configurability is the root of all evil and it has been one of the core principles for Apple since a long, long time. And they have been quite successful with it. If you want configurability, you should probably look for a different OS.

Why not just use the keyboard up/down keys instead if you like those arrows so much?

10.1.5 was horrifying with one of these:
Apple_iMac_USB_mouse.jpg

Then again anything was horrifying with the one button hockey puck mouse.
You had to glue a googly eye to one side of the thing just to tell which way it was oriented.

Multi-touch is absolutely useless on an iMac with a mouse.

Why? I use a trackpad to the left of my keyboard and a mouse to the right.

I can't imagine not having a trackpad for scrolling. So much easier than using a mouse. And pointing with a mouse is so much easier than a trackpad. So, I use both, and have been for the past 2 years and love it.

They're very useful and I hate that Mavericks doesn't have them.

Try using the post Snow Leopard scroll bar when you have a loss of control & sudden involuntary movements of your arms… Since the mid 1970's, computers have never had any barriers to me, a person who has cerebral palsy. As a newbie hardware designer about to launch, I believe that software use should be barrier free, and will be helping that to happen.

Tim Cook and co KNOW that the scroll bar is now an accessibility problem so his "solution" is to ignore my many e-mails, feedback submissions, and block me from following him on Twitter...

One has to question his views on customer complaints / suggestions…

I don't understand why Apple felt the need to make OS X look like iOS…

That is the reason Apple staff have given for the unnecessary / inaccessible change to scroll bar…

Worrying!!!
